Tell us about yourself and your studies.

I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I did my bachelors degree at the University of Cape Town in Sociology and Psychology. My previous thesis was An Exploration into the Experiences of International Students at the University of Cape Town during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

What is your favourite thing about your study programme at Tampere University?

I really enjoyed my courses as they were so focused on my research interests. I also enjoy how small most of my courses were as with smaller classes I was able to engage with the course material and the lecturer more.

What kind of student activities have you participated in?

I got really involved in the social aspects of studying and joined the board of my student association. I was the Social Affairs Officer so I was involved in many many social and student activities. I got the chance to visit museums, take part in laser tag, sauna events, Sitsits, Pub quizzes and parties. There is always a fun event to take part in.

Did you develop any special skills while studying in Tampere?

Besides learning during my degree I have had the chance to learn other skills while studying. I have learnt a lot about planning events as the Social Affairs Officer of my student association. I have also learnt more skills in terms of foraging as I spent much of the summer picking berries and mushrooms that grow wild in Finland.

What tips would you give to new students who are applying to study here?

I would suggest new students find things that interest them and get involved. Getting involved in more than just your course work is really rewarding.

What do you like most about Finland?

I love many aspects of Finland. I love the weather as each season is so distinct and different and it changes so dramatically over the year. I really enjoy "boring Finnish" hobbies such as foraging for berries and mushrooms, sauna and ice swimming. I also love the honestly of Finnish people.

What do you like to do in your free time in Tampere?

I like to be busy so I tend to do a lot in my spare time. I like to hang out with my friends and do outdoor activities. Winter has been really great as I have taken to going to sauna and ice swimming which feels like an extreme sport. I have also gotten involved in the community and volunteered with a local animal shelter. This has had the added bonus of helping me to learn more Finnish.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Tampere University has been a really great place to study and I have been really loving living in Tampere.
