Tampere University once again featured in the Shanghai Ranking

The latest ARWU results were published in August.
Tampere University retained its position from the previous year, ranking among the top 600 universities globally (501–600 band). ARWU assigns an exact placement only to the top 100 universities, while institutions ranked below this threshold are grouped into broader bands.
Research output accounts for more than half of Tampere University’s overall score. The University also recorded a slight improvement in the indicator measuring highly cited researchers, rising from 6.6 points in 2025 to 7.4 points in 2026.
ARWU assesses universities using a range of research and academic performance indicators, including publications indexed in major citation indices, the number of highly cited researchers, and articles published in Nature and Science, which are among the world’s most prestigious scientific journals and primarily publish research in the natural sciences and medicine.
In addition, ARWU takes into account the number of alumni and academic staff who have received a Nobel Prize or a Fields Medal.
This year, seven Finnish universities were included in the ranking. ARWU evaluates more than 2,500 universities worldwide and publishes the results for the top 1,000 institutions. The University of Helsinki was placed among the world’s top 150 universities, while Tampere University and the University of Eastern Finland were both ranked in the 501–600 band.
Harvard University retained first place, followed by Stanford University in second place and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in third. The top three positions have remained unchanged since 2022.
The Shanghai Jiao Tong University began compiling ARWU in the early 2000s. Since 2009, it has been published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organisation.
