Research
Overview
We are the leading partner in the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research (FIT), awarded by the Research Council of Finland for 2022 – 2029. FIT studies the effects and design of multiple aspects of public policy. Overall, our research program is very broad, covering a multitude of topics related to public finance, labor, health, and environmental economics, and industrial organization. Our research utilizes empirical, experimental, and theoretical methods, together with world-class administrative data on individuals and firms.
Our department also offers a PhD program in economics, and our PhD students participate in various research projects under the supervision of senior faculty members. We offer an excellent research environment with a wide network of international and domestic collaborators. Please see the FIT website for more information on our research, activities, seminars, and publications.
Studies
Economics is part of the degree programme in business studies.
We provide an internationally standarized programme in economics. Our curriculum covers core courses (microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics at Bachelor and Master’s levels) as well as field courses e.g. in public economics, labour and personnel economics, behavioural economics, monetary and financial economics, and regional economics.
The programme provides excellent job opportunities both in the private and public sectors, in Finland and abroad. Tampere economics alumni have reached top positions e.g. in the banking sector, in policy advice and evaluation, as civil servants e.g. in different ministries, and in the academia.
Students select their main subject in their second year of study.
Information on Economics courses can also be found in the study guide.
In addition to studies in Economics and Business Studies, the students can take courses in other subjects, across the different Faculties of Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences.
Doctoral education in economics is organized jointly with other economics units in Finland, through the Finnish Doctoral Programme in Economics.
Some courses are organized jointly with universities from other Nordic countries.
Students interested in pursuing doctoral studies in economics at Tampere University should contact their desired supervisor before application.
