Some of the studies require prior studies. For example, studying intermediate studies may require some completed basic studies. These are described on the Information about studies tab of the study unit under prior requirements.

When you have been admitted to the studies, you must enrol separately via the Sisu information system for the implementation of the unit of study and, for example if set, for a practise group of your choice. You will receive instructions on how to do this by e-mail after you have confirmed your acceptance of the study place by paying the required fee.

Many modern governments collect close to 50 % of GDP in taxes, and use this revenue to fund public services. This course analyzes the reasons for the involvement of the public sector in the market economy. Why do markets sometimes fail to promote individual welfare? Should the public sector address issues such as providing insurance against economic shocks, tackling rising inequality, and combating climate change &#8211; and how? On the other hand, what are the implications of high taxation for individuals and businesses?

The student learns how to apply microeconomic analysis to important public policy questions. The student understands the role of the public sector in the market economy. The student learns the principles of analyzing the effects of public policies on individuals and firms, and gets acquainted with key research findings on these topics. The student is able to apply the concepts and approaches introduced in the course to critically analyze current public policy debates.&#160;
