Tampere University Student's Handbook

Tuition fees

Tampere University and TAMK

Tuition fees apply to non-EU/EEA citizens studying in Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes offered in English at Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. Fees range between 8,000 and 12,000 euros per academic year depending on the programme. Tuition fees apply to students who have been admitted in 2017 or later.

You are not required to pay the tuition fee if you are:

  • an EU/EEA citizen
  • equivalent to EU/EEA citizen (i.e. citizen of Switzerland)
  • British citizen who has entered Finland before 1 January 2021 and registered, or applied to register, the right to residence in Finland in accordance with the withdrawal agreement  Article 50.
  • already reside in Finland (a continuous A residence permit granted on other grounds than studies or a permanent P/P-EU residence permit), or have an EU Blue Card issued in Finland. The exempting residence permit must be valid on 1 August / 1 January i.e. when the study right commences. Please note that a residence permit in another EU/EEA country does not exempt you from the tuition fee

There are no tuition fees in doctoral programmes.

If you are unsure about whether you are subject to tuition fees, please see Am I required to pay tuition fees? section on the Studyinfo.fi site.

Early bird offer

If you are a fee-paying student and you have not been awarded a Tampere University scholarship on admission, you may take advantage of the early bird offer covering 50% of your programme tuition fee by accepting your study place and paying 50% of the tuition fee within two weeks of receiving your letter of acceptance. This offer is valid only for the first year of studies.

Students accepted to Master's programmes in 2022 must accept their study place and pay 50 % of the tuition fee on 22 April 2022 at the latest to take advantage of the early bird offer. Please see your acceptance email for the payment information.

If you have any questions on your early bird payment, please contact the Tampere University Student Affairs Office at studentservices.tau [at] tuni.fi.

Refund policy

As a first year student in 2022, you have a right to a full refund (excluding any bank charges) of a tuition fee paid to Tampere University if:

  • you have been admitted conditionally but do not graduate on time and your study place is cancelled,
  • you are not granted a residence permit in Finland and therefore cannot start your studies,
  • your residence permit status changes before 31 July 2022 and you are no longer liable to pay fees (in such case the new Finnish residence permit card must be presented as proof before 31 July 2022),
  • you are unable to start your studies due to long-term illness or maternity leave.

Tuition fee payment after the first year of studies

In consecutive years, the annual fee must be paid before semester enrolment. A fee-paying student is only able to enrol as an attending student once s/he has paid the tuition fee. The annual tuition fee is paid using an online payment system. Payment methods include credits cards, MobilePay and Finnish online banking. The link to the payment system is available on this page during the enrolment period for the academic year. If you need to pay your tuition fee at another time, please contact the Student Affairs Office (studentservices.tau [at] tuni.fi) for the payment information.

Fee-paying status

Non-EU/EEA citizens studying in Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes offered in English are fee-paying.

Those non-EU/EEA students who have the right to continuous or permanent residence in Finland (residence permits A granted on other grounds than studies, residence permits P and P-EU) are exempt from paying tuition fees. In addition, British citizens who have applied for or been granted right of residence in Finland under the withdrawal agreement are exempt from paying tuition fees. In order to be exempted from paying tuition fees, the proof of exemption (nationality or residence permit) needs to be effective at the beginning of each semester (1 August and 1 January). In the first year of studies, proof of exemption valid on 1 August will grant an exemption from paying tuition fees for the whole academic year.

If the student's residence permit or citizenship status changes during studies, the student must to provide the Student Affairs Office with proof of the new status without delay. The student’s status will change and any reimbursement of paid fees will take effect from the start of the semester following the date when the University was made aware of the changed status. If the student’s status changes from exempt to fee-paying prior to the start of a semester but the University is made aware of the changed status only after the start of the semester, the University may charge the tuition fee for the semester from the student retroactively.

If a fee-paying student completes a period of exchange studies within his/her degree, s/he is liable to pay tuition fee to Tampere University also during the exchange. The credits completed during the exchange must be included in the Tampere University degree.
