Student Rights and Obligations

As a student of Tampere University of Applied Sciences, you have certain rights and obligations. The following list contains them as defined in, for example, TAMK degree regulations, disciplinary regulations, and other guidelines.

  • Give course and student feedback
  • Register for attendance or non-attendance (through PAKKI)
  • Make sure that your personal information in the PAKKI system is correct
  • Follow the TAMK information channels (PAKKI, Intranet, online learning environments)
  • Plan your individual study plan (HOPS)
  • Respect the studying and working of others and behave appropriately
  • Follow common cleanliness practises and take care of the TAMK equipment you utilize
  • Keep your network password secret
  • Do not commit fraud (more information here)
  • Do not use or be under the influence of narcotic substances during teaching or practising situations

  • To use the TAMK information technology services and receive your own network credentials
  • To take part in teaching and receive study guidance throughout your studies
  • Accessibility assistance, if an expert deems you require it
  • Know beforehand how a course grade is determined and receive feedback on your performance
  • Retake a study performance up to two times per course
  • Make amendment requests either in writing or orally when you are unsatisfied with your grading
  • Receive a degree certificate of your studies and an attached transcript of records.

Quality

Students have the right and obligation to give course and student feedback. (Degree Regulations, 6 §)

Registration for Attendance or Non-Attendance

During the duration of their study entitlement, students have the obligation to register for attendance or non-attendance through PAKKI each academic year. (Degree Regulations, 11 §)

Students have the obligation to check and make the necessary changes to their contact information in PAKKI and notify the study secretary of changes in the personal data. (Degree Regulations, 11 §, 12§)

Information Dissemination

It is the student's obligation to follow TAMK's electronic information channels, such as email, PAKKI, intranet, and online learning environments. (Disciplinary Regulations, 7 §)

Individual Study Plan

Students have the obligation to make their individual study plans within the limits defined by the degree structure and degree programme curriculum. It is also the students' obligation to maintain their individual study plan and check it annually with their teacher tutor. (Degree Regulations, 17 §)

Credit Transfer for Studies and Competence

Students have the right to receive credit transfer for studies completed in other Finnish or foreign higher education institutions or universities.

Students also have the right to apply for recognition of know-how acquired elsewhere, regardless of where and how it has been acquired. The recognised know-how has to conform to degree programme course objectives. It is the student's responsibility to demonstrate the know-how and provide sufficient information. (Degree Regulations, 18 §)

Appropriate Behaviour

Students have the obligation to follow the working orders and agreed upon working hours. Students have the right to study in peace and free from disturbance. (Disciplinary Regulations, 1 §)

Treatment Referral of Substance Abusing Students

Comings and Goings

It is the student's obligation to follow common cleanliness and handle TAMK's property carefully as well as to notify the caretakers of related faults and deficiencies and suspicious activity at TAMK facilities. Everyone must follow common caution and special facility guidelines. (Disciplinary Regulations, 2 §, 3 § and 4 §)

ICT Security

Students have the right to use TAMK electronic student services and the obligation to follow the instructions of TAMK Information Management, and the guidelines on responsible use of TAMK information network, as well as to keep their user names safe. (Disciplinary Regulations, 6 §)

Participation in Teaching and Student Counselling

Students have the right to participate in personal student counselling during their whole study time. Students have the obligation to participate in student counselling and take responsibility for their study progress.

The student has the right and obligation to participate in the work forms of the degree programme courses in such a manner that the course objectives are attained.

Students have the right to know the competence objectives, contents, teaching methods, assessment criteria, and duration of each course.

Course-specific learning objectives and key contents are described in the degree programme curricula. The online implementation plan describes the work forms, requirements, completion order, schedule, and assessment criteria of each course. They are discussed in detail at the beginning of the course when students have to attend as stated in the implementation plan. (Degree Regulations, 20 §)

Accessibility in Studies

Students have the right to have support and special arrangements in their studies after demonstrating their learning-related special needs with specialist statements. TAMK commits itself to promote accessible higher education studying as required by the Non-Discrimination Act. Students' individual skills and abilities in completion of studies are considered in organisation of education and guidance of learning if possible and reasonable. (Degree Regulations, 29 §)

Assessment of Completed Courses

Students have the right to know the assessment criteria of each course in advance. The assessment criteria of courses are described in detail in the course implementation plan.

Students have the right to be informed of the course grade in three weeks after the last course performance. The student has the right to receive feedback on the completed course, familiarise himself/ herself with the assessed study performance and be informed of the application of assessment criteria in his/ her own case. Students have the obligation to check their transcript of records annually.

Upon request, the student has the right to have a transcript of records including the completed studies and grades during the studies. (Degree Regulations, 23 §)

Fraud

Examination frauds and copying of assignments or material are forbidden. The procedure described here (log into intranet) is followed in cases of detected and/or suspected fraud in connection with theses, examinations or other written assignments. (Disciplinary Regulations, 6 § and 10 §; Degree Regulations, 32 §)  

Retake of Study Performances and Improvement of Grades

Students have the obligation to participate in course examinations and other assessed performances. Students have the right to retake failed or unattended performances twice. If the student is unable to present an acceptable reason for his/ her absence in an examination or retake, the absence is considered as fail. If the student does not pass any of the retakes, (s)he has to re-enrol on the course and complete it as agreed on with the teacher. The student has the right to try to improve the grade of passed courses once normally in connection with the course retake examination. (Degree Regulations, 25 §)

Amendment Request

Amendment requests to teachers
If students are dissatisfied with the assessment of their study attainment or with credit transfer for studies or competence demonstrated otherwise, they have the right to request its amendment either in written or orally by the person who has made the decision. The amendment decision has to be made in 14 days after having the chance to receive the assessment results and application of assessment criteria or the credit transfer decision. If students notify that they will not content themselves with the amendment request decision, the decision and related grounds have to be given in written.

Amendment requests to Board of Examiners
If dissatisfied with the amendment decision concerning assessment of study attainment or credit transfer, the student may submit a written amendment request on it to Tampere University of Applied Sciences' Board of Examiners in 14 days after being informed of the decision. The amendment request is delivered to TAMK’s Registry and Records Management: tamk [at] tuni.fi (tamk[at]tuni[dot]fi)

TAMK’s Degree Regulations

Intoxicants, Intoxication and Smoking

Possession and use of intoxicants and drugs, and intoxication are forbidden in study or practical training situations. The student has the obligation to present a drug test certificate if TAMK has a justified reason to suspect that the student is under the influence of drugs in study-related practical duties or practical training or the student is addicted to drugs. The student has the obligation to follow the property owner's instructions on smoking. (Disciplinary Regulations, 5 §)

Treatment Referral of Substance Abusing Students

Degree Certificate

Students have the right to have a degree certificate for the degree they have completed and a transcript of records as an appendix to it. The degree certificate states the degree and its extent, title, name of the degree programme and option or study path, and key contents of the degree. In addition, the student receives a Diploma Supplement for international use. (Degree Regulations, 27 §)
