Many of our research initiatives focus on urban transition and dynamics on different scales and often in alternative contexts outside the key metropolitan areas. The urban research at Tampere University is dedicated to theoretically-sound yet practice-oriented approach to find solutions for a sustainable urban transformation.

Research priorities

At Tampere University, we combine society, technology and health to study and create more sustainable urban environments. Topics on our research agenda include for example urban planning, biodiversity, environmental health and energy transition.

We place a significant focus on democracy, justice, and political movements in cities, ensuring that urban development is socially inclusive and equitable. Our interest is in urban life in all its spectrum, as we examine how people and other species can coexist in urban settings.

Aiming for a sustainability breakthrough

We bring together urban research, education, stakeholder collaboration, and citizen engagement with an aim to foster transdisciplinary research and partnerships that drive impactful change in Tampere and beyond. This collaborative approach enhances the societal impact of our research and enables us to contribute to the development of more sustainable and livable cities.
