Sustainable Productivity at Work – Leading Identities as a Competitive Advantage (ID LEAD)

Tampere University
Duration of project1.4.2025–31.12.2027

An unprecedented transformation in working life, talent shortages, and declining employee well-being are pushing organizations to renew themselves. This research and development project highlights the critical role of work identity in continuous learning, resilience at work, and employee engagement. Previous research has shown that an employee’s sense of meaning, competence, and belonging in the workplace — in other words, their work identity — is a key resource that strengthens both individual and organizational resilience, learning, and performance. A strong work identity not only helps prevent burnout and early retirement — it also lays the foundation for sustainable productivity, renewal, and innovation.

The ID LEAD project develops and pilots a new identity-based leadership model that integrates continuous learning and identity into organizational strategy, leadership, and daily operations. What sets this approach apart is its emphasis on supporting both individual and collective identities alongside structural changes. Our goal is to build a more human-centered working life — one that promotes continuous workplace learning and well-being. The project will deliver concrete, research-based solutions that enhance well-being at work, support skills development and learning, and create competitive advantages both nationally and internationally.
