Smart Biomedical PlaTforms Using Advanced Stimuli-Responsive Materials (STAR)

Tampere University
Duration of project1.9.2025–31.8.2029

The STAR project aims to develop innovative smart biomedical platforms using advanced stimuli-responsive liquid crystal elastomer
(LCE) materials. These platforms are designed to revolutionize medical devices, enabling them to autonomously adapt to various
physiological conditions. Key applications include vascular sensors that mold to the shape of blood vessels, smart surgical sutures that
reduce patient discomfort, and shape-memory vascular stents that respond to environmental stimuli.

By leveraging LCE materials with tunable dynamic bonds, the project focuses on ensuring versatility, environmental stability, and biocompatibility. This research will address key challenges in material performance, enhancing their ability to function effectively in diverse medical settings, and advancing the potential for intelligent, adaptive biomedical devices.
