Procedure for requesting research permission at Tampere University of Applied Sciences

If your research or development project concerns TAMK at the institutional level, the required research permission is granted by the Vice President. The permission to conduct a research project that explores a specific school, degree or activity is granted by the director of the school.

If TAMK staff members participate for example in collecting research data during their office hours or if TAMK’s internet or intranet services or other resources are used, the research permission is granted by the vice president. If staff from only one school take part in conducting the study, the permission may be granted by the director of the school. TAMK’s contribution or resource is described in detail on the research permit form at Role of TAMK in the research project.

A research plan, data management plan and privacy notice have to be attached to the research permit application (form below). They describe how data is collected, who collects the data, how the data is used, how and where the data is stored, where and how the results are reported, and how and when the data is archived and/or destroyed. You can find closer instructions on the Finnish Social Science Data Archive’s website.

Email list addresses are not given to outsiders and survey invitations are not sent by mass email. The survey invitation and link to the survey form can be sent to students and staff through news services (e.g. intranet) of TAMK and the Tampere Universities community. Student unions are in charge of their communications media.

Please note that TAMK may only grant you an institutional permission to carry out your study. You must separately request consent from your research subjects to participate in the study.

Procedure for granting a research permission at Tampere University of Applied Sciences

TAMK will primarily grant permission to conduct scientific research or thesis-related research that focus on developing TAMK at the institutional level or the fields of study offered by TAMK.

If TAMK’s staff take part in carrying out your study during their working hours or if TAMK’s resources are used for the purpose of conducting your study, you will be required to deliver the research report, publication or other output, as specified in the application, to TAMK after your study has been completed.

Researchers must agree to process and protect data in compliance with the provisions set out in data protection laws. After the study has been completed, data relating to individuals must be securely disposed of or archived as provided for by law.

The research permission may be revoked if you do not comply with the terms and conditions set out in TAMK’s decision. If the permission is revoked, you will be required to return the information you have received from TAMK.

Data disclosure requests for research purposes at TAMK

If you need data from the University’s registers or confidential documents, you will need a decision for disclosing the data for research purposes instead of a research permission. Instructions: https://www.tuni.fi/en/research/responsible-research/research-ethics/data-disclosure-requests-for-research-purposes-tamk

TAMK staff and students

An organisational research permit is not required for:

  • a small-scale study related to courses carried out by students.
  • TAMK's internal development work (unless it involves other research activities, e.g., scientific publications).
  • an RDI project led by TAMK, the design of which does not contain sensitive personal data or which does not require ethical review.

An organisational research permit is required for:

  • research resulting in a scientific publication/publications (e.g., JUFO-classified scientific journals).
  • a thesis research that is carried out either as a student of another higher education institution (e.g. a bachelor's or master's thesis or a doctoral dissertation conducted by a TAMK staff member) or a master's thesis conducted by a TAMK student.
  • An RDI project involves special categories of personal data or ethical review by ethical committee.

N.B! Please notice that even though a research permit is no longer required from TAMK's own students and staff, a legally binding privacy notice must be drawn up for the processing of personal data, and the risk posed by the processing of personal data to research subjects must be assessed. Personal data refers to any information that can be used to identify a person, directly or indirectly. In addition, the free consent of research subjects must always be requested.
