Tampere University kept its place in Shanghai ranking

Tampere University was included in an international university ranking published in August. The University held its place from the previous ranking as it was included in the category of 600 best universities (category of 501—600).
The 100 best universities are given individual results while the rest are grouped in categories of 100. The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compares more than 2,500 universities, from which the top 1,000 are selected for the ranking.
ARWU ranks universities using several academic or research performance indicators, including papers indexed in major citation indices, highly cited researchers and articles published in the Nature and Science journals. Nature and Science, which are among the most prestigious science journals, publish research mostly on natural sciences and medicine.
The comparison also notes Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals in Mathematics awarded to both researchers and alumni.
Harvard University took the first place in this year’s ranking. Stanford University came second, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was the third. The same universities have comprised the top three for several years.
The Shanghai ranking was first conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in the early 2000s. Since 2009, the rankings have been produced by the independent ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
