More than half of the students graduating from Tampere University in 2023 completed a master’s, Licentiate’s or a doctoral degree. A record number of international students graduated throughout the year. At the autumn graduation ceremonies, the speeches will highlight internationality, resilience, and support for students working on their thesis.

By 11 December 2023, 1,744 students have completed a bachelor’s degree, 2,129 a master’s or the Licentiate of Medicine degree. Six have completed a Licentiate’s degree and 167 a doctoral degree. The figures include a record number of 251 international students who have graduated from English-language degree programmes, while the corresponding number for 2022 was 146. The figures are not final as new degrees are still being recorded daily and the final figures will not be available until January.

Vice President for Education Marja Sutela says that, during the Covid 19 pandemic, the studies of many international students were delayed due to, for example, difficulties in entering the country. Now that the campuses have re-opened, also international students have been able to complete studies as usual.

“I hope that as many international students as possible will find employment in Finland after graduation. We have developed operating models to strengthen the working life connections of international students during their studies. For example, the first-ever Thesis Fair brought together more than 200 international master’s students and companies and organisations looking for authors for their thesis projects,” Sutela says.

“University studies produce knowledge that endures the test of times on which to future careers can be built. Self-management and resilience are increasingly important skills for which University studies prepare. I would like to thank the University’s teaching staff and education support staff for encouraging the students in these times of change after the pandemic,” says Provost Jarmo Takala.

Both Sutela and Takala heartily congratulate all graduates on their remarkable achievement.

Graduation is not a matter of course

Lotta Orsmaa, a computer science student, will give the graduate’s speech at the ceremony on the city centre campus. She emphasises that writing the thesis is a big effort overall.

“The pandemic, cut-backs and struggles with the Sisu information systems – graduating from a university cannot be taken for granted. I would very much like to congratulate all of us graduates and especially those who, for one reason or another, have had to struggle for their graduation. In addition, I would like to remember those who have had to drop out for personal reasons,” Orsmaa says.

For the experimental study in her thesis, Orsmaa compared three methods of moving virtual reality in order to interact with medical 3D images. She is now working as a research assistant in interaction research at the TAUCHI Research Centre where she also intends to continue as a doctoral researcher.
