Personal email
Personal email is a part of the Microsoft 365 service package used by the higher education community. Email, calendar, tasks and contacts can be found in the Microsoft 365 Outlook messaging service. Outlook is one of the most important tools for work and studies.
All browser based applications of Office 365 are available at https://m365.cloud.microsoft. Log in by using your TUNI email address.
Email addresses from former organisations will be retired by the end of 2025
Email addresses from former organisations (tamk.fi, uta.fi, tut.fi) will be retired by the end of 2025 due to weaker security and higher maintenance costs. Recent large-scale phishing attacks have specifically targeted these addresses, and they are currently being widely used for spoofing.
How to check messages sent to your old email address
- Open Outlook and enter the following in the search field: to: 'your old email address' (e.g. to: 'eric.example [at] uta.fi')
- The search results will display all messages sent to that address.
If you wish to continue receiving messages from certain senders or use your old email address as a username in any service, please refer to that service’s instructions for updating your email address or login credentials.
If you wish to continue receiving messages from certain senders or use your old email address as a login ID for any service, please refer to that service’s instructions for updating your email address or login credentials. Using a TUNI email address as a login ID for consumer services is not recommended.
Once the old organisation email addresses have been deactivated, senders will receive an automatic notification indicating that their message could not be delivered to the recipient.
This change will not affect existing tuni.fi email addresses.
Outlook
You can use email in the browser via Outlook Web Access (OWA) as well as with separate email software for computers or mobile devices, such as Outlook. You can use the service regardless of the time and place.
Log in to your email at https://m365.cloud.microsoft with your personal email address as firstname.lastname [at] tuni.fi or firstname.x.lastname [at] tuni.fi and its password.
Your email features 50 GB of storage space and malware protection. The mailbox is located in the cloud service. Your password will not be stored in the cloud. The service complies with Microsoft’s service agreement.
N.B!
- The automatic forwarding of e-mail: it is forbidden to transfer or automatically redirect organisational or work-related email messages to an account offered by a provider other than the University due to information security, privacy protection and information management reasons. In addition to this, it may constitute a breach of data protection legislation. E-mail Terms of Use of the higher education community.
- Students can forward their email to the email address of their choice.
- The External label makes it easier to identify messages that are sent from outside the organisation, such as spam messages where the sender is a fraudulent TUNI email address. The functionality is supported in Microsoft Outlook versions, and we recommend using email with a browser or the Outlook software (works also on mobile devices).
- The Safe Links: When you receive an email that contains links, Safe Links checks them and warns you about transferring to harmful websites. If the link is safe, you are routed to the original destination. If the link is unsafe, you see a warning message telling you why following the link has been stopped.
- The Safe Links function also works on Microsoft Teams and supported Microsoft 365 applications.
- Please keep an eye on your Spam folder in case important email messages have arrived there. You should move the important messages to another folder. You can also change your spam settings.
- You can restore a message from the recycle bin for 30 days. After that, you can no longer restore the message.
- You can also use other email programs to read your email. However, the IT Helpdesk does not support for these programs.
- Your email is available for 14 days after your right to study ends. The staff members’ right to use the email ends in the end of their employment.
- By using the tuni.fi email you commit to following the E-mail Terms of Use of the higher education community.
- If you wish, you can add the following text to your signature: "This message is intended solely for the designated recipient and may contain confidential information. If you are not the intended recipient, please destroy the message and notify the sender. The use, disclosure, and existence of the message and its transmission information are prohibited by law (Act on Electronic Communications Services, Section 136)."
Instructions:
- Writing and sending email
- Adding an automatic signature
- Setting automatic reply
- Organising email
- Mail in Outlook Web App
- Set up Office apps and email on a mobile device

Selection of recipient field
The recipient of the e-mail can be placed in three different address fields: recipient (To), copy (Cc) or blind copy (Bcc). The selection of the address field does not matter in terms of the delivery of the message. However, from the point of view of the privacy of the recipient of the e-mail, it matters in which field the recipient is entered. An email address is personal information that should not be shared freely with anyone.
