Student computer labs software

Tampere University and TAMK

Some software are available on all campus computers and TUNI Virtual Desktop, some are only in the computer labs located on a specific campus, or only in specific computer labs or virtual desktops. Due to limited disk space and license restrictions, it is not possible for all software to be available in all computer labs.

The standard software has been selected in collaboration between teaching staff and ICT Services. As a rule, software installations and upgrades are centrally managed. Upgrades are usually installed in the summer, with the exception of security updates and other critical updates.

Requests to install software

IT Services accept software installation requests from teaching staff. In addition, each spring we conduct a survey about software needs for the next semester. It will be announced in Intranet news and people who have previously sent installation requests will be contacted.

Software requests for student labs should be sent using the order form Opetustilojen ohjelmistoasennuspyyntö in the Helpdesk portal. The form is only available in Finnish.

Requests that have already been sent - both uninstalled and installed, can be viewed on the nightly-updated PowerBI report TUNI opetustilojen ohjelmistoasennuspyynnöt.

IT Services installs certain software updates without a request. Security updates will be installed as soon as possible. Some of the research and teaching software will be updated yearly and these will be visible on the PowerBI report as well.

The creation of an installation package, the necessary testing and related license management affect the speed to resolve installation requests. Installation requests must therefore be delivered well in advance. If there is already an installation package of the requested version of the software, the request can be resolved in 1 to 3 days. If the software or its requested version hasn't been previously in use, the time to resolve the request can take 2 to 3 weeks outside peak times. The start of semester is a peak time when the process may often take longer than usual.

If you need more information on making these requests or need help in filling the order form, please contact IT Helpdesk by email.
