Johdan Tampereen yliopistossa toimivaa osaa Suomen Akatemian rahoittamasta RELATE huippuyksiköstä, ja toimin Tilan ja poliittisen toimijuuden tutkimusryhmän (SPARG) johtajana. Olen myös New Social Research tutkimuksen profilaatio-ohjelman varajohtaja ja Intelligent Society profilaatio-ohjelman johtoryhmän jäsen. 

Tutkimukseni sijoittuu poliittisen maantieteen ja ylikansallisen sosiologian piiriin. Keskeisimpiä tutkimusteemojani ovat poliittisen subjektiviteetin ja toimijuuden tutkimus, pakolaisuuden ja pakotetun siirtymisen tutkimus sekä ylikansallistuminen erilaisissa empiirisissä konteksteissa. Olen erityisen kiinnostunut haavoittuvassa asemassa olevien ihmisten poliittisesta toimijuudesta. Olen urallani tutkinut myös territoriaalisuuteen liittyviä diskursseja, tietomuotoja ja käytäntöjä, rajoja ja kansallisia identiteettejä, kaupunkisuunnittelua ja kansalaisosallistumista sekä ihmismaantieteen metodologiaa.
