The use of electronics has been a key aspect of our everyday lives, and since its development, it has been a key contributor to the improvement of living. However, most of the electronics that are used in our daily lives have been rigid. Recent studies on flexible electronics, which can undergo strain and stress in any form while maintaining their electrical performance, have been gaining significant momentum. This can lead to advancements in the enabling of wearable electronics systems, which would be useful for numerous applications such as healthcare, logistics, monitoring etc.
Developing textile-based wireless sensors
Khan’s dissertation primarily focuses on the use of 3D printing in combination with passive RFID technology for the integration of electronic peripherals that are capable of wireless communication on fabrics. Certain 3D printing materials – with their ability of being flexible and stretchable – can be used for platform development capable of maintaining an optimal electrical functionality in addition to being reliable from external mechanical and environmental factors, such as stress and moisture to a great extent.
Additionally, as the study progressed, Khan’s study led to the development of textile-based wireless sensors which can be used for temperature and moisture sensor applications, utilising the basic concepts of 4D printing. In this aspect of the study, Khan also proposes various applications where his study on wireless sensors can lead to advancements in the manufacturing of sensors.

Public defence on Thursday 6 April 2023
The doctoral dissertation of M.Sc (Tech.) Zahangir Khan in the field of Biomedical Sciences and Engineering titled Unobtrusive Implementation of Wireless Electronics into Clothing will be publicly examined at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University at 12.00 EEST on Thursday, 6 April 2023. The venue is auditorium S2 in Sähkötalo, address: Korkeakoulunkatu 3, Hervanta campus. The Opponent will be Research Professor Jussi Hiltunen. The Custos will be Associate Professor Johanna Virkki from the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences.
