Wireless Goes Directional in 5G and Beyond

Vitaly Petrov´s thesis aims to facilitate cutting edge high-rate directional wireless communications in millimeter wave and terahertz bands. Directional millimeter wave and terahertz wireless systems call for novel methods to analyze the network performance, as well as to maintain continuous connectivity between the nodes.

The emergence of directional millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communication systems is one of the major innovations introduced by the telecommunication industry in recent decades. Inline with decisive advantages, directional mmWave and THz networks require rethinking certain communication paradigms, new methods to design, deploy, and maintain communication systems in these frequencies.

With the gates of higher frequencies open, perceptions have changed and now it seems that the sky is the limit, to the point that researchers are already looking into the sub-THz (100-300 GHz) and full THz realms, where many GHz of idle bandwidth await.” says Professor Angel Lozano, the Editor of IEEE ComSoc Technology News (CTN).

The dissertation begins with a discussion on the emerging mmWave and THz wireless systems, highlighting the principal changes introduced by directionality. Further, novel tools for performance evaluation of mmWave and THz networks are contributed. Finally, several technological enhancements improving the reliability and security of these networks are presented and analyzed.

The doctoral dissertation of MSc. Vitaly Petrov in the field of communications engineering titled Analysis and Enhancement of Directional Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Band Systems will be publicly examined in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University at 16.00 on Monday 10th August 2020. The Opponent will be Professor Tommaso Melodia from Northeastern University, USA. The Custos will be Professor Evgeny Kucheryavy from the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University.
