CATALIS – Cross-program Adoption and Transfer of Arctic Low-carbon Ice-resilient Solutions

Co-funded by the European Union
Websites

The CATALIS project brings together leading research institutions across the Northern Periphery and Arctic region to transfer Arctic infrastructure durability research into practical solutions for engineers, infrastructure owners, and public authorities. Co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme, the project builds on the outcomes of earlier Arctic research projects: OFFwind and Ar2CorD.

CATALIS focuses on improving the long-term durability and sustainability of infrastructure exposed to harsh Arctic and coastal environments. These structures face severe challenges such as freeze–thaw degradation, chloride-induced corrosion, ice loading, and ice accumulation, all of which are intensified by the region’s demanding climatic conditions. The project aims to synthesise previous research findings and translate them into accessible, practical knowledge for real-world implementation.

Tampere University’s Coating Technologies Research Group contributes specialised expertise in advanced coating technologies for icephobicity and corrosion protection. Building on research developed in the OFFwind project, the group investigates functional surface solutions designed to enhance the durability of infrastructure operating in cold marine environments, including offshore energy systems and coastal concrete structures.

Through CATALIS, Tampere University contributes to strengthening international collaboration in Arctic infrastructure research and supports the development of sustainable, resilient solutions for northern communities. The project promotes knowledge sharing across borders and helps bridge the gap between scientific research and practical implementation.
