Tampere University receives EDUFI-TFK funding for SECURE project with Ukraine

The two-year project focuses on crisis management, robustness, and institutional preparedness in higher education. Drawing on the experiences of Ukrainian universities operating under wartime conditions, the project seeks to create opportunities for mutual learning between Finnish and Ukrainian higher education communities. 

As part of the project, the partners will jointly develop and deliver a new 5 ECTS study course "Ukrainian Studies in Higher Education: War, Crisis, and Institutional Change" for Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral students. The course will be offered in 2027 and 2028 through a hybrid format that combines on-site teaching at Tampere University with virtual participation from Ukraine. 

Rather than focusing solely on how European universities can support Ukraine, SECURE highlights the expertise Ukrainian higher education institutions have developed while maintaining teaching, research and societal engagement during the Russian full-scale invasion. The project therefore contributes both to strengthening the visibility of Ukrainian perspectives in higher education studies and to enhancing crisis preparedness and resilience within Finnish higher education. 

The project will also benefit from collaboration with the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies and the Alliance of Ukrainian Universities, which will support dissemination and knowledge sharing throughout the project.

SECURE is one of nine projects selected for funding under the Ukraine-specific TFK call in 2026. The programme supports international higher education cooperation and aims to strengthen partnerships between Finnish and Ukrainian universities.
