At the interface between engineering and health sciences
The biomedical engineering industry is an increasingly important, global high-tech sector. In Finland, the HealthTech industry is especially strong. With the emergence of numerous small enterprises, the fields of biomedical sciences and engineering are rapidly expanding and offer diverse career options. This programme provides you with a solid understanding of the challenges related to biomedical sciences and health technology. You will become familiar with advanced technologies at the interface between engineering and health sciences and have the ability to develop innovative solutions to solve these challenges.
The Biomedical Informatics specialisation is jointly taught in both our international programmes:
- Master's programme in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (MSc Tech)
- Master’s programme in Biomedical Technology (MSc)
Biomedical Informatics
Biomedical Informatics specialisation focuses on the development and application of computational methods for biomedical and healthcare applications, including health informatics, data science, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, decision support systems, and biomedical data analytics. The specialisation combines engineering, computer science, and health sciences, providing a unique interdisciplinary education at the interface of technology and medicine. Students gain both theoretical understanding of biomedical data, computational modelling, and advanced analytics, as well as practical skills in programming, algorithm development, data management, machine learning, and health data processing. Emphasis is placed on the growing availability of complex biomedical and healthcare data and the increasing role of artificial intelligence in improving healthcare, diagnostics, and biomedical research. Graduates learn to develop and apply innovative informatics solutions, including predictive algorithms, clinical decision support systems, bioinformatics tools, digital health applications, and data-driven healthcare technologies.
This master’s programme is taught in English. Before applying, please check our language requirements for master’s programmes.
Please note that the curriculum is currently under revision, and changes may be introduced from autumn 2027. The revised curriculum will be available in spring 2027.
Career opportunities
You will be able to demonstrate critical thinking and professionalism and pursue a career in industry, with healthcare providers, or continue on the academic track towards a doctoral degree. You may also be a natural-born entrepreneur and launch your own start-up. Health informatics experts can find careers for example in the IT services industry or with healthcare providers in developing new IT systems. Data science skills enable you to pursue careers to develop algorithms for multidisciplinary problems at the intersection of health and IT, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or medical device industry, and to work as a bioinformatician or data-scientist in various roles in research and industries focusing for example on big data from molecular level to population level.
