Duration of project1.9.2024–31.8.2027

GATE is an Erasmus+ cooperation project that develops, tests and promotes a new digital gamified learning model for entrepreneurship education in higher education. The project combines gamification, entrepreneurship education, challenge-based learning and digital learning environments to create engaging and motivating learning experiences. The project seeks to support students in developing creativity, problem-solving skills, collaboration competences and an entrepreneurial mindset through interactive and practice-oriented learning. A gamified learning methodology and a set of learning materials will be developed first, followed by the creation of a prototype digital learning platform. The platform will incorporate authentic business challenges provided by companies, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world situations while collaborating in national and international teams. The project is implemented through a partnership between University College Nordjylland in Denmark, Tampere University of Applied Sciences in Finland, UCLL in Belgium and Hochschule Düsseldorf in Germany.

Background

Higher education is facing increasing pressure to respond to digital transformation, changing labour market demands and the growing importance of sustainable development. Traditional teaching approaches are often perceived as insufficient for preparing students for rapidly evolving professional environments that require creativity, entrepreneurial thinking, digital competence and collaboration across disciplines and borders. Student engagement and motivation, particularly in online learning environments, have become critical challenges for educational institutions. The experiences of recent years have highlighted the need for innovative pedagogical approaches that make learning more meaningful, interactive and relevant to real-world contexts. European education and digitalisation policies emphasize the importance of entrepreneurial competences, digital skills and innovative educational practices. GATE was created to address these needs by integrating gamification, entrepreneurship education and digital learning into a modern educational model that enhances both student learning and institutional capacity for innovation.

Goal

The goal of GATE is to transform entrepreneurship education through the development of a gamified online learning methodology that increases student motivation, participation and learning outcomes. The project will produce a comprehensive gamified learning framework, innovative learning materials and a prototype digital platform that supports entrepreneurship education through interactive and challenge-based learning. The project aims to strengthen students’ entrepreneurial competences, creativity, critical thinking, teamwork abilities and digital skills by connecting learning activities with authentic business challenges. It also seeks to support educators by providing new pedagogical approaches and practical tools for delivering entrepreneurship education in digital environments. In addition, the project aims to strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions and businesses while creating a scalable and transferable model that can be adopted by educational institutions across Europe.

Impact

GATE is expected to improve student engagement, enhance learning outcomes and strengthen entrepreneurial capabilities among learners. By combining gamification with real-world business challenges, the project will promote deeper learning, practical problem-solving and international collaboration. The project will provide higher education institutions with innovative methods and digital tools that support educational quality, digital transformation and curriculum development. Companies will benefit from closer cooperation with higher education institutions and from fresh perspectives provided by student teams working on real challenges. In the long term, the project is expected to contribute to stronger entrepreneurial cultures, improved employability, increased innovation capacity and more responsive higher education systems across Europe. The project will also support the broader adoption of digitally enhanced and learner-centred educational practices in entrepreneurship education.
