Question: When do I have to apply for accommodation?

Answer: If you apply for accommodation from student housing provider TOAS, please apply accommodation immediately when the application period starts. <a href="https://toas.fi/en/ajankohtaista/application-period-for-furnished-rooms-autumn-semester-2024/">The application period for furnished rooms for Autumn semester 2024 will be opened on the TOAS web site on May 6th at 9:00</a> (UTC+3:00).&nbsp;

 
Question: I do not have my residence permit yet, can I apply for housing?

Answer: You do not have to have a residence permit ready to apply for accommodation at TOAS. 
&nbsp;

Question: I have not been able to find an apartment. Can the university offer me a dorm room?

Answer: Unfortunately no. The university does not have its own dormitories, and therefore we cannot offer you accommodation. Question: I have not heard back from TOAS nor gotten an accommodation offer from them and I applied right away when the application period opened. What should I do?

Answer: Just wait patiently. In the spring and summer time TOAS is dealing with hundreds and hundreds of new applicants; they will get back to you as soon as your queue number is up and they have an apartment/room offer for you. Please do not send extra emails requesting updates on when you will receive an offer, this just slows the process down.

Question: I got an apartment offer from TOAS starting 1 July, but I am not planning to move until August. What should I do?

Answer: If you want the room/flat, accept the accommodation as instructed by TOAS. We strongly recommend that you do this. 
If you do not accept the offer, you will need to make a new application and you go to the end of the queue at TOAS. Please note that if you go to the end of the queue, you will most likely not get accommodation in time for the start of your studies and you will need to come up with some kind of temporary arrangements.

Question: If I accept a room already in June, when will I need to start paying for it? 

Answer: You will have to start paying for your room when your lease starts as TOAS is holding the room/flat empty for you. 
&nbsp;

Question: I will arrive in Tampere on a Sunday night, where can I collect my keys and who will take me to my flat?

Answer: If you arrive at night or on a Saturday or Sunday, it is a good idea to book a hotel room for the first one to two nights as for example the TOAS key office is not open at those times and it will most likely be impossible to get the keys for your accommodation. At daytime on a weekday, your tutor often can help with your key and advice you on how to get to your housing with public transport or even help you getting there. A convenient choice is using a taxi as a taxi can drive you directly to your door. Taxis are available at “taxi poles”, the railway station or a hotel can, for example, call you a taxi to pick you up.

Accommodation

Question: On which campus will my studies take place?

Answer: To check on which campus your studies take place, please check the webpage of your programme for the campus information. You can find your programme through: <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/programmes/masters-programmes">https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/programmes/masters-programmes</a>. Go to the interleaf "Information about studies" and check the bottom of the info box.

Question: If I live in Hervanta, can I travel to city centre easily for my lectures (or vice versa)?

Answer: Yes. There is an excellent tram and bus system (Nysse: <a href="https://www.nysse.fi/en/front-page.html">https://www.nysse.fi/en/front-page.html</a>) in Tampere and you can travel quite easily between city centre and Hervanta.

Question: Are there parking spaces reserved for students on campuses?

Answer: Yes, on Hervanta and the city centre campuses. You need a parking permit in order to park your vehicle. Question: Is there a gym on campus that students can use?

Answer: Yes, there is a gym on each campus. You need to pay the SportUni membership fee in order to gain access to the gym. Please read more at <a href="https://sites.tuni.fi/sportuni-en/how-to-join/">https://sites.tuni.fi/sportuni-en/how-to-join/</a>. After you have paid the membership fee, the access rights can be added on your student card at SportUni service desk. If you have only a mobile student card, you can get an access card from a campus info desk.

Campus

Question: I have been awarded the 100% tuition fee scholarship, but I cannot start my studies this year. Can I defer my studies with the scholarship?

Answer: Yes. If you are unable to begin your studies this year, you may join us next year with the scholarship. Please make sure to accept the offered study place by the deadline to confirm it. You will receive further instructions at the end of July concerning deferment.

&nbsp;

Question: I have not been awarded a scholarship and I cannot start my studies this year. Can I start next year and use the Early Bird offer then?

Answer: If you are unable to begin your studies this year, you may join us in autumn next year. Please make sure to accept the offered study place by the deadline to confirm it.

Regarding tuition fees, you have the option to take advantage of the Early Bird offer as you have not been offered a scholarship. However, as a rule, the Early Bird offer cannot be deferred unless you defer your studies for one of the reasons included in our <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/starting-your-studies/studying-tampere/tuition-fees">tuition fee refund policy</a>. In other words, if you pay 50% of your tuition fee by the deadline specified in your admission letter and therefore accept the Early Bird offer, you either need to begin your studies this autumn or have one of the reasons listed in the tuition fee policy to defer the Early Bird offer together with the study place until next year. Please note that in any case you need to pay the fee by the given deadline to accept the offer.

Question: I have been admitted conditionally. Can I defer the start of my studies?

Answer: Yes, you can, but first you need to accept the study place offer on Studyinfo and fulfill the conditionality of the offer by the deadline given in your acceptance letter.

&nbsp;

Question: I cannot arrive in Tampere by the start of the Welcome Week. What should I do?

Answer: If it seems that you will not receive your residence permit in time to join us by August 19 (remember: you need to accept your study place offer by 11 July), you need to contact your programme and talk about this with them in advance. The general rule is that everyone needs to start their studies on campus. Thus, when you apply for your residence permit, it is a good idea to apply for it to start on the 15th of August at the very latest, so that you will have time to get settled and organised in a new environment before the Welcome Week starts on the 19th of August, 2024. That way you have time and energy to fully concentrate on your mandatory orientation during Welcome Week and have a smooth start with your studies.

Deferment of studies

Question: What is the refund policy concerning tuition fees? 

Answer: As a first year student, you have a right to a full refund (excluding any bank charges) of a tuition fee paid to Tampere University if:

<ul>
	<li>you have been admitted conditionally but do not fulfill conditional acceptance requirements on time and your study place is cancelled,</li>
	<li>you are not granted a residence permit in Finland and therefore cannot start your studies,</li>
	<li>your residence permit status changes before 31 July and you are no longer liable to pay fees (in such case the new Finnish residence permit card must be presented as proof before 31 July),</li>
	<li>you are unable to start your studies due to long-term illness or parental leave</li>
</ul>

&nbsp;

Question: I do not have enough money to pay the tuition fee in time to use the Early Bird offer. Can the offer be extended? 

Answer:&nbsp; Unfortunately we cannot extend the Early Bird deadline unless you need the extension for unexpected circumstances out of your control such as the bank closing suddenly for an extended period of time. In such situations you need to provide us with some kind of evidence, e.g. a link to a news article with information on the matter in English. Therefore e.g. not procuring funds in advance is not a valid reason for being granted an extension.

Question: Can I pay the tuition fee in instalments?

Answer: You can pay the tuition fee in instalments, but in order to take advantage of the Early Bird offer, all instalments must be paid by the deadline specified in your admission letter. Please follow the instructions provided in the acceptance letter for making the payment(s).

If you are going to pay the full tuition fee and not take advantage of the Early Bird offer, all instalments must be paid before you can register as a student.

&nbsp;

Question: I cannot pay the tuition fee myself. Can another person pay the fee on my behalf?

Answer: Yes, it is possible that another person pays your tuition fee. In this case their details will be provided on the payment form in the section "Payer information" and the student's in the section "Info for the receiver".

Question: I have paid the tuition fee, but it may take some time before the payment goes through. Will the Early Bird offer expire if Tampere University does not receive the payment by the Early Bird deadline?

Answer: It is sufficient that you pay the fee by the deadline. The Early Bird offer will not expire even if the fee arrives to our account after the deadline, just as long as the payment was made to Flywire in time, which we can see on the payment system.

&nbsp;

Question: I have paid the tuition fee through Flywire. When will I receive a payment confirmation from the University?

Answer: The University will not send separate payment confirmations. Instead, you can download a payment confirmation from the Flywire payment portal.

Early Bird offer and tuition fees

Question: Do I have to pay the healthcare fee for students in higher education?

Answer: Yes. The basic rule is that all higher education students are required to pay the KELA fee for each semester, regardless of their personal health insurances. This will grant you access to the Finnish student health services (FSHS). There are, however, a few exceptions if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, Switzerland, Great Britain or Northern Ireland. Question: How do I pay the KELA fee?

Answer: KELA is the national social security institution and the fee needs to be paid to KELA, not the University. The fee per semester is currently 36.80 EUR. (The fee can change a little bit annually, please check the KELA link below for this.) For autumn semester, the fee needs to be paid by the end of September. Please note that you will need to pay the fee unprompted, you will not receive a bill for this.

Your health insurance or the healthcare fee you are required to pay to Kela do not affect your study right in any way. You will need to take care of these independently. Neither process requires a Finnish bank account. Healthcare fee for students in higher education ("KELA fee")

Question: How much money do I need per month?

Answer: Living costs depend a lot of your personal choices, but a realistic budget per month is upwards from 700 eur/month. It is very important to have sufficient funding to cover your costs when you come, as finding a job in Finland can be quite challenging especially if you do not have Finnish language skills. Question: Does Tampere University offer financial help to students struggling with the living costs?

Answer: Tampere University does not have any living cost funding schemes available to students. However, we encourage students to look into organisations in their home countries as there may be some that offer stipends and scholarships to students studying abroad.

Question: I do not have any winter clothes, furniture or household items. Where can I buy them affordably?

Answer: There are many second-hand shops in Tampere. For example, <a href="https://uff.fi/aukioloajat-ja-yhteystiedot/" target="_blank">UFF</a> sells seasonally appropriate clothes, shoes and some household items in good condition at an affordable price. Another example is <a href="https://sprkontti.fi/sv-en-ru#Briefly" target="_blank">Kontti</a>, operated by the Finnish Red Cross, that sells clothes, textiles, furniture, and household items among other things.

There is additionally a <a href="https://intra.tuni.fi/en/content/news/55132">recycling room on the city centre campus</a> that you can check out. The offering of the room varies naturally depending on what is brought in.

&nbsp;

Question: Are there jobs at the University that students can apply for?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Answer: Yes. There are sometimes open positions as a teacher/research assistant or e.g. as an intern. Question: Can I work in Finland to earn some extra money?

Answer: You can work freely in Finland if you are a citizen of an EU Member State, Liechtenstein or Switzerland. If you need a residence permit for your studies, you can work up to 30 hours per week. Please note that the annual average may not exceed that. However, your studies will require a lot of time, so you should not plan on working too much and please note that finding a part-time job in Finland can be very challenging, especially if you do not have Finnish language skills. Therefore, making sure that you have adequate funding already in advance is extremely important.

Living expenses and working

Question: I cannot register as attending on My Studyinfo -service. How can I register?

Answer: If there are no suitable identification methods for foreigners available, please wait patiently for further instructions to be sent by the end of July. We will then contact all new students who have accepted the study place offer online by the given deadline and provide information about the registration as well as instructions how to enrol as attending or absent for the next academic year and how to activate your user account.

Registration as a student

Question: I have booked a personal appointment to DVV, should I cancel it?

Answer: Yes. Please follow the instructions provided at <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/starting-your-studies/studying-tampere/registration-authorities-new-degree-students">https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/starting-your-studies/studying-tampere/registration-authorities-new-degree-students</a>.

N.B.&nbsp;The only&nbsp;exception&nbsp;to above are&nbsp;those arriving with their families. If you register your whole family at the same time, you must&nbsp;<a href="https://isl.ajanvaraus.fi/frontend/?lang=en">book a separate time at the DVV office</a>. Question: How long will it take to get my ID number/registration to be ready from DVV?

Answer: The processing times vary a bit by bit depending of your application. You can check the current queue times at <a href="https://dvv.fi/en/processing-times">https://dvv.fi/en/processing-times</a>.

Remember to update your Finnish personal identity code to your student profile in Sisu when you get it. Question: I want to take care of the DVV registration already in advance, how do I do it?

Answer: It is recommended to fill in the e-form in advance, but you cannot finalise the process from your home country as an in person meeting with the local DVV officials is required. Do not, however, book a personal slot at the DVV office but complete your registration on campus days. <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/starting-your-studies/studying-tampere/registration-authorities-new-degree-students">You can find the times and places under “1. DVV registration” on this page.</a>&nbsp;(Times and dates updated closer to autumn semester 2024.) The registration is&nbsp;free of charge. Please note that when you fill out the e-form in advance, do not do it too early as you need to visit the campus days within a month of registering digitally.

N.B.&nbsp;The only&nbsp;exception&nbsp;to above are&nbsp;those arriving with your families. Question: I already have registered with DVV, do I need to do it again at the University?

Answer: If you have already finalised your DVV registration earlier and already have your ID (e.g. you have lived in Finland before your studies have started), you do not have to redo the registration. Please note that whenever you move, you need to update your address to DVV: <a href="https://dvv.fi/en/moving">https://dvv.fi/en/moving</a>.

Question: I am Finnish, do I need to come to the DVV days on campus to register?

Answer: If you are Finnish, you are already in the DVV database and have an ID, therefore you do not have to come to register. Please note, however, that you have to update your address to DVV when moving: <a href="https://dvv.fi/muutto">https://dvv.fi/muutto</a>.

Registration with Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV)

Question: I cannot apply for a residence permit within seven days. Can I apply for it later?

Answer: We strongly recommend that you initiate the residence permit application process within seven (7) days in order to get your application in before the queues become really long. The processing times can be lengthy during spring and summer, so that is why we tell students to get started on the application process as soon as possible. However, if you cannot submit the application with seven days, no need to panic, you can submit the application later too.

&nbsp;

Question: I need an address in Finland for my permit (or insurance) application, can I use the University address?

Answer: Most of the incoming students have no address in Finland for their different permit or insurance applications; just state “not available yet” and give your phone and email as usual on the forms. Do not use the university addresses.

&nbsp;

Question: I need to write the start and end date of my studies on my residence permit application. What are those dates?

Answer: Your studies will officially begin on the first day of the Welcome Week. The date is mentioned on your letter of acceptance. On the residence permit application, you can also mention when you would preferrably like the permit to become valid. When you apply for your residence permit, it is a good idea to apply for it to start at least five (5) days before the start of the Welcome Week at the very latest, so you will have time to get settled and organised in a new environment before your studies begin.

The academic year officially ends on 31 July each year. Master's degree studies typically take two academic years and Bachelor's degree studies take five academic years. Therefore, master's degree students can mark 31 July (starting year + two years) and bachelor's degree students 31 July (starting year + five years) as the end date of their studies.

&nbsp;

Question: Will the university send unconditional offer letters when the conditions of the study place offer have been fulfilled?

Answer: No, we will not send "unconditional admission letters" to admitted students. Instead, you should use the admission letter you have already received when you apply for a residence permit. If you are liable to pay tuition, you should use the payment confirmation from Flywire together with the Early Bird offer letter to prove you have paid tuition when you apply for a residence permit. If you have been awarded a scholarship, please use the scholarship letter to support your residence permit application.

&nbsp;

Question: I have applied for a residence permit but there are no appointments available at the embassy/consulate or the appointment is in late summer. Can you at Tampere University do anything about it? 

Answer: We at Tampere University have no power over the appointment slots with regard to the residence permit application process. We are aware that many new students are facing this same issue, and we will send an email regarding the registration and starting your studies in late July to all new students who have accepted their study place offer by the deadline specified in the letter of acceptance. You will also be informed how to defer your studies if you cannot join us in time this autumn.

&nbsp;

Question: I need to make changes in my permit application, can I make these changes through the University?

Answer: No, you cannot. For all questions relating to your residence permits (e.g. amendments to your application), please contact Migri, the Finnish Immigration Service. &nbsp;

Question: I will not receive my residence permit in time to arrive in Tampere by the Welcome Week. Can I start my studies online and when is the last date to start studies on campus?

Answer: Please contact the Education Specialist of your degree programme as programmes may have different policies and deadlines for arrival. The Education Specialist is the person who sent you the admission letter. Welcome Week is mandatory for all new students as a lot of information that you will be needing during your studies is shared during that week. Many course registrations are also taken care of during the Welcome Week. If it absolutely impossible for you to join us in time to start your studies this year, deferment of studies is possible.

Residence permit

Question: I was not offered a scholarship at admission. Can you reconsider and award me one? 

Answer: Unfortunately all Tampere University scholarships available on admission have been awarded at the same time with the admissions decision and information on scholarships has been sent to applicants together with the letter of acceptance. There is no waiting list for the scholarships, and it is not possible to appeal the scholarship decision. All fee-paying applicants are, however, eligible for the early bird offer. Detailed instructions on the early bird have been sent to students in the acceptance email. Question: When can I order my student card?

Answer: You can order a student card on 2 August at the earliest if you have registered as attending by then. Please follow the instructions at <a href="https://trey.fi/en/for-members/member-services/student-card">https://trey.fi/en/for-members/member-services/student-card</a> for ordering the card. You can also activate a mobile student card. Question: Why am I not able to get the student discount on Nysse (Tampere regional transport) even though I have registered as attending?

Answer: If the academic year has already started (1 August) and your study right is active, the most common reason for this issue is that we do not have your Finnish personal identity code in your student profile. Question: I am unable to activate my TUNI user account. What can I do? 

Answer: The first step is making sure you have registered as attending. If you have paid the Student Union membership fee via My Studyinfo, please wait 2-3 days before trying to activate the user account. If you have paid the Student Union membership fee as a bank transfer (payment instructions provided in late July/early August), please remember to send the receipt at studentservices.tau [at] tuni.fi (studentservices[dot]tau[at]tuni[dot]fi) and we will register you. We will let you know once your registration is in order and you can activate your user account.

Answer: Tutors will contact new students at different times during the summer depending on your degree programme. They will contact you in early August before the Welcome Week, at the latest. In the meantime, during the summer, you can use GOIN’ application to reach out to your peer students. You can find the GOIN' registration link in your acceptance email from your programme.

In the Finnish system, tutors are your peer students from an earlier student cohort. They help you in getting to know the student life in Tampere, finding your way in the campuses, getting active in the student associations and so forth. Tutors are not professional tutors and they are not responsible for e.g. your study planning. The Education Specialist of your programme will help you planning your studies during Welcome Week and after. In other study related official matters (e.g. tuition fees, deferment) you can contact the <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/planning-studies-and-study-guidance/guidance-and-counselling-services-contact-details/student-affairs-office">Student Affairs Office</a>.

Answer: In some programmes most of the first semester course registrations are done during the Welcome Week. Additionally, in some programmes most of the first-year courses are also mandatory. If this is the case, you will be provided a course list and timeline when the courses are to be studied. The Education Specialist in your programme and possibly – again depending on the arrangements made in your programme – the student tutors (second year students in your programme) will help you with curriculum planning, course choices and course registration.

Answer: You can get a certificate of student status after you have registered. You can download a digitally signed certificate of a student status on Sisu on the Study rights tab. You can access Sisu on 1 August at the earliest if you have registered by then. You can also collect your certificate of student status from <a class="Hyperlink SCXW154868632 BCX2" href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/about-us/tampere-university-student-affairs-office" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">the Student Affairs Office</a> or request one via email (studentservices.tau [at] tuni.fi (studentservices[dot]tau[at]tuni[dot]fi)).
