Intertwining Digitalization and Sustainability

The ongoing societal transitions of digitalization and sustainable development are key megatrends that define our times. These transitions are typically researched separately, and chasms between research disciplines and institutions hinder building a systemic understanding. For sustainable development, digitalization is both an opportunity and a threat. It is indeed a double-edged sword—prone to hurt a wielder whose knowledge is lacking. To gather knowledge on how to control these effects, Digital and Sustainability Transitions in Society: Double-Edged Sword (DigiSus) research platform was founded in January 2024.

The DigiSus research platform aims to create holistic and cross-disciplinary insights into the intertwining digital and sustainable transitions.

We bring together experts, offer funding for research, and guide society towards a brighter future.

Digitalization involves many unique sustainability considerations, opportunities, and challenges. We need interorganizational long-term collaboration and different research traditions to come together to develop novel concepts and theories, to empirically study various intertwined phenomena, and to define more advanced evaluation metrics, policies, and forms of oversight. We feel that Tampere University has all the relevant expertise to become a globally leading institution at this cross-section of social sciences, computer science, information technology design, and economics. Uniting efforts across faculties, as well as with leading responsible IT-sector companies and public sector actors in Tampere, can pave the road for a digitally sustainable future for Tampere University and the wider community around us.

What are we here to do? We aim to..

  • Develop a new community around the cross-sectioning thematics of sustainability and digitalization

  • Increase research excellence in the thematic area

  • Attract more funding

  • Develop education and policies

  • Inform industry practice and create new collaboration

  • Support Tampere University’s research culture
