Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery

Tampere University
Area of focusHealth

Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery is full of exciting research and clinical controversies. While emergencies and on-calls are mandatory to practically solve a clinical catastrophe or complication, patient-centered surgical treatment aims for long-term success and outcome. Resilient surgery calls for immediate dexterity, and pragmatic clinical research reveals follow-up results and enhances understanding of the nature of the underlying cardiovascular and thoracic pathogenesis.

Cardiovascular and thoracic research signifies multicenter teamwork. We embrace projects that fall into the following three main categories:

1. Translational research

Evaluation of clinical patient charts, surgical techniques and data including histological evaluation of excised surgical tissue such as aortic tissue procured during resection of the dilated and dissecting aorta.

2. Clinical research

Multicenter collaboration that consolidate the scientific cardiothoracic taskforce e.g. in the Nordic countries.

3. Experimental research

Novel preclinical and surgical treatment concepts are investigated while using the rat heterotopic cardiac transplantation and volume-overload models. The objective is to study surgical means that may alleviate global, local and systematic inflammatory processes associated with ongoing ascending aortic dilatation and cardiac insufficiency.
