The project aims at biologically recovering elemental sulphur from haloalkaline solutions using pure and mixed microbial cultures. Biological sulphur recovery from industrial (i.e. pulp and paper, petrochemical) streams has potential to enhance environmentally and economically sustainable production. The produced elemental sulphur can be recycled for industrial use or used, for example, in agriculture.
The project involves fundamental studies on biotransformation mechanisms and development of bioreactor processes.
