The 2023 Teaching Award of the Finnish Business School Graduates (Suomen Ekonomit) was awarded to Associate Professor (tenure track) in Insurance Science Timo Rintamäki from Tampere University. Suomen Ekonomit (The Business School Graduates in Finland) is a central organisation for graduates and students in economics and business administration. The award was conferred on Wednesday 16 August 2023 in an awards ceremony in Jyväskylä. The prize is €6,000 and it is financed by the KAUTE Foundation. The KAUTE Foundation supports studying, teaching and research in economics and technical sciences and the dissemination of research results.

The Finnish Business School Graduates annually awards a teacher, who significantly has improved the quality of business studies. The recipient of the award is selected by the committee deciding on the winner based on student associations’ proposals and justification. This year, the theme of the teaching award was responsible and future-oriented teaching. Particular attention was paid to the ways in which the teacher increases students' ability to succeed responsibly in a rapidly changing world, how he or she supports students’ critical thinking, and with what pedagogical and innovative solutions the teacher inspires the students.

The committee based its choice on Rintamäki’s challenging, thought-provoking courses, which make students get to know diverse perspectives, are flexible in structure and methods, and well received by the learners themselves. Rintamäki was nominated for the award by the business students’ association Boomi ry at Tampere University.

“In times of deep uncertainty, the importance of responsibility and future orientation in competence is emphasised even more. One of the best cures for uncertainty is the ability to evaluate and apply what has been learned from different perspectives and in different contexts. In this case, encouraging critical thinking and a balance between theory and practice is particularly important in teaching. I am really grateful for this recognition and for being able to work with my students on these themes”, says Rintamäki.
