The international degree programmes of Tampere University are very attractive

In the first joint application round for higher education this spring, Tampere University received a more than 4,000 applications. The English-language bachelor’s programmes, which will begin in autumn 2024, attracted 3,154 applications, meaning that the number of applications grew by more than 20 per cent from last year. Theatre arts also invited applications in the first round.

The first joint application round to higher education in spring 2024 ended on 17 January. Applicants were able to apply for 3 English-language bachelor’s programmes as well as for the Finnish-language Degree Programme in Theatre Arts.   

A total of 4,254 applications were submitted, and the number of applications grew by 60 per cent compared to the previous round. However, the Degree Programme in Theatre Arts did not invite applications last year and was thus not included in last year’s numbers. 

The multidisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Urban Development continued to be popular, attracting 1,689 applications in total. The applicants applied for the specialisms in the programme as follows: Administrative sciences (988), Social sciences (382) and Technology (319). The numbers increased by 10 per cent from last year. 

Applicants also found the new Degree Programme in Socially Sustainable Societies attractive, and the programme received 230 applications.   

The popularity of the Degree Programme in Science and Engineering also increased compared to last year. To the two specialisms in the programme, a total of 1,235 applications were submitted: Computing and electrical engineering (796) and Natural sciences and mathematics (439). The numbers grew by 10 per cent from the previous year. 

A total of 1,034 applications were submitted to the Finnish-language Degree Programme in Theatre Arts, which comprises both the bachelor’s and master’s levels, with 66 applying directly to the Master’s Programme in Theatre Arts. In both programmes, the number of applicants grew from the previous application rounds. In 2021, 957 applications were submitted to the Degree Programme in Theatre Arts. In 2019, applicants to the Master’s Degree Programme in Theatre Arts numbered 49. 

There were 3,472 individual applicants, who represent over 100 nationalities. The number of Finnish applicants was 1,645. Of the applicants, 1,688 — 49 per cent — came from outside the EU/EEA area. 

In the second joint application round to higher education, arranged from 13 to 27 March 2024, Tampere University’s Finnish-language programmes will be inviting applications. 


Updated on 29 January 2024: The number of applications to the Science and Engineering programme has been corrected. The false number that was first presented was due to a typing error.
