Award-winning Professor Alexandros Iosifidis returns to Tampere

Alexandros Iosifidis will join Tampere University as a Professor of Machine Learning.
Iosifidis is transferring to Tampere from Aarhus University, Denmark, where he has been a professor since 2021.
Iosifidis’s research interests focus on machine learning and computational intelligence. His work involves designing, analysing, understanding and implementing machine learning approaches, with applications in computer/robot perception, finance and graph-structured data problems.
“Alexandros Iosifidis is a versatile and distinguished AI scientist who will further advance Tampere University’s research in this field. He possesses strong methodological expertise and a wealth of experience in applying research methods across diverse areas, including wind power, robotics, machine vision, finance and the Internet of Things,” says Jyrki Vuorinen, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC) at Tampere University.
“The donation from Foundation PS represents a pioneering step towards fostering a stronger culture of philanthropy in Finland and enables Tampere University to pursue this important new initiative,” Vuorinen adds.
Alexandros Iosifidis returns to a city he knows well
Iosifidis is relocating to a city he knows well, having worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the then-Tampere University of Technology from 2015 to 2017.
“I am looking forward to conducting world-class research at Tampere University and promoting AI research and development activities not only nationally but also across Europe. The timing was right to return to Tampere,” Iosifidis says.
Iosifidis has received numerous awards and accolades during his academic career, including the JP Morgan Chase Faculty Research Award in 2022 and the prestigious Early Career Award from the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) in 2021.
The new AI professorships form a network of PS Fellows
Foundation PS was established to strengthen the AI research ecosystem and competitiveness of Finland and Europe. The purpose of the donated professorships is to lay the groundwork for long-term, high-quality research.
The donation will also support the activities of the international ELLIS Institute. The new professorships will create a network of PS Fellows.
“It is fantastic to see that Tampere University has successfully filled the position with a top-tier expert like Iosifidis – and on such a swift timeline. This serves as a great example of how internationally renowned researchers can be attracted and how we can further solidify Finland’s position as a global leader in AI," says Peter Sarlin, founder of Silo AI and Foundation PS.
