Sharing large files
Funet FileSender is a service designed for sending very large files to anyone and receiving files from anyone. You can send or receive files with several people at the same time. The size limit for files transferred at once is 300 gigabytes. The Funet FileSender service is provided by CSC – IT Center for Science, whose instructions for the service can be found on the page Sharing and transporting files using Funet FileSender.
The service sends a normal email message with a link for receiving or sending files to the email addresses you enter. Anyone who gets hold of that message can retrieve the files you sent from the service or send files to the service. All files sent to the service—whether sent by you or others—have an expiration time after which they are deleted.
Sending
- Start the service on the Funet FileSender page, log in with HAKA.
- Select the files you want to send.
- Enter the recipients’ email addresses (make sure they are correct).
- Fill in any other fields you want.
- Send the files by clicking Send.
Receiving
With this instruction, you can create a message for senders that contains a link they can use to send files to you through the service. When the sender has uploaded files to the service, you will receive an email and can download the files by logging into the service and going to the My Transfers tab.
- Start the service on the Funet FileSender page, log in with HAKA.
- Select the Guests tab.
- Enter the recipients’ email addresses (make sure they are correct).
- Tick the box Can only send to me.
- Although the service says the recipient can send you files only once, it is possible multiple times. If you want your recipients to be able to send you files without a time limit, tick Does not expire.
- Fill in any other fields you want.
- Send the link by clicking Send.
Files sent to you, along with sender information, can be found under the My Transfers tab.
Encryption If the files to be transferred contain personal data or other confidential content, the files must be encrypted with a separate program before sending. The FileSender service has a feature for encrypting files, but it is not sufficient protection.
- If you need to send confidential content, first create an encrypted copy of the files using either 7‑Zip or VeraCrypt according to the following instruction pages: Encrypting attachments and VeraCrypt encryption software. Send the password used for the encryption by text message to the recipients’ personal phone numbers.
- If you need to receive confidential content, ask the senders to first create an encrypted copy of the files using either 7‑Zip or VeraCrypt according to the public instruction pages mentioned above. These programs are freely available to everyone. Ask the senders to deliver the password used for the encryption by text message to your personal phone number.
