Student Ambassador Evgenii Shornikov, originally from Moscow, moved to Tampere from Russia to pursue his bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering.

How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here originally?

This is my second year in Tampere. I came here to study at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences.

What subject do you study and how did you choose it?

I am following the Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering. When I was going through the options, environmental engineering caught my eye. That is because I have always wanted to make a difference in this world. In my opinion, an environmental engineering degree will allow me to be a part of something bigger in the future.

How would you describe Tampere as a student city?

Tampere is a place for students! Here, you can find almost everything. It is a great place to make new connections, have fun, and study. There are dozens of bars for nightlife and several University library branches where you can study in peace and quiet. If you are into sports, then Tampere would surprise you with the variety of options offered. There is something for everyone in Tampere!

Have you had memorable successes in settling in Tampere?

I have really enjoyed the Welcoming Week, where tutors gave us a tour of Tampere. Being in a crowd of students, waiting for the official part of the event while enjoying the company of like-minded people...it was truly amazing! I think that I will carry that memory with me throughout my life. Another thing that I truly love about my studies is being an environmental engineer. The fieldwork with consequent work in the laboratory is a fulfilling experience. Examing the local flora and fauna gives a feeling that you're a part of a much bigger ecosystem than just our human community. Our world is fragile and we should do everything in to preserve it!

To whom would you recommend Tampere as a place to study and why?

Everyone can find something of his own in the city. The Tampere Universities community provides access to libraries all around the city so that you don't really have to go anywhere and can stay in your local neighbourhood. If you wish to get to know Finland, Tampere is definitely a place to visit. The history of the city can provide context to what Finland is today. There are unlimited opportunities to make new connections and friends. Tampere is a great place to experience life in a city, while also being close to nature. Beautiful forests and parks are located all around the city.
