Pre‑modern Routes in Finland Can Now Be Explored Through the Viabundus Map
In pre‑modern times, people travelled only a few tens of kilometers per day — on foot, on horseback, or by sleigh or wagon. Inns and taverns formed an essential part of the route network. Remnants of old roads can still be identified in the landscape today. Historians at Tampere University, Jenni Lares and Tapio Salminen worked in a project with the Viabundus map, which lets us trace historical routes in Finland. Some can still be traversed today.
