The world is facing key challenges such as a changing climate, biodiversity loss, social injustice, and poverty, and how we design, build, and administer our cities can play a key role in meeting these challenges. Tampere University’s Sustainable Urban Development Bachelor’s degree programme teaches the new generation of experts to apply multidisciplinary expertise to help tackle these issues and develop the sustainable cities of the future.
About the Technology specialisation
The Sustainable Urban Development programme provides integrated, multidisciplinary teaching related to urban development and sustainability. It consists of three specialisations, Administrative Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology, which students select when applying.
Technology students develop a broad theoretical basis for applying technological and civil engineering solutions to create sustainable built environments, and the foundational skills and knowledge to become a technology professional. Alongside your technology-specific studies, selected multidisciplinary courses bring you together with students in social and administrative sciences specialisations. This helps technology students understand urban development from several perspectives, develop interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration skills, and identify novel and constructive ways of solving complex problems.
Urban Lab
Through a challenge-based Urban Lab course, students are engaged in real-life urban development projects in collaboration with organisations such as the City of Tampere. The course provides students the opportunity to engage with local urban planners, citizens, and organisations to help identify and understand real-world development challenges, and work in interdisciplinary teams to co-create solutions. Opportunities
This programme aims to meet the societal and industry need for more environmental problem solvers and an adaptable and dynamic workforce that can work together to solve challenges. SUD graduates from the technology specialisation have found employment in city organisations, academia, and engineering and tech companies, where they have been recognized for their interdisciplinary thinking, adaptability, and interpersonal and group work skills gained during their studies. All SUD technology students are eligible to continue their studies for the Master’s degree studies in the Master’s Programme in Civil Engineering - Urban Systems Engineering and the competencies to apply to other master’s programs.

All students accepted for this Bachelor’s Programme are automatically given the right to continue their studies for the Master’s degree, if they wish to do so. When accepted in Technology, Sustainable Urban Development, you will automatically have the right to continue studies in the Master’s Programme in Civil Engineering - Urban Systems Engineering.
