Sergei Glotov
In his doctoral dissertation M.Soc.Sc. Sergei Glotov studied cultural representation in audio-visual media which mostly relies on stereotypes, reducing the diversity in the world. Glotov proposes to pay critical attention to a such cultural misrepresentation which offers a different perspective on cultures and their people, presenting it as the correct and the right one. To overcome the issue Glotov links intercultural education with film literacy to promote open dialogue and critical thinking among media users and consumers.

Audio-visual content is now more accessible than ever with films, series, and videos being a click away. On top of being a source of entertainment, these media often offer insights into foreign cultures, people, customs, and ways of living. Unfortunately, when it comes to cultural representation, the media mostly relies on stereotypes, reducing the diversity of our world.

M.Soc.Sc. Sergei Glotov in his doctoral dissertation proposes to pay critical attention to such cultural misrepresentation which offers a different perspective on cultures and their people, presenting it as the correct and the right one. To overcome the issue of cultural misrepresentation in audio-visual media, Glotov links intercultural education with film literacy to promote open dialogue and critical thinking among media users and consumers.

Reducing misrepresentations via theoretical and practical contributions

Intercultural education promotes understanding of and respect for cultures through open dialogue between different cultural representatives. Glotov links intercultural education with its emphasis on dialogue with film literacy, a concept that is about the ability to critically analyse, evaluate, and produce own films.

As Glotov states: “When linked with film literacy, intercultural education may stimulate critical examination of films’ messages, form, and style, while broadening one’s knowledge of another culture, thus combating cultural misrepresentation”.

The research contributions are both theoretical and practical. It broadens the concept of intercultural education by moving beyond nation-based cultures and including the voices of LGBTQ+ people. It also expands the concept of film literacy to encompass all forms of audio-visual media from streaming services to YouTube and TikTok. Finally, it reveals the need to promote the discussion of cultural representation in open educational resources, while offering six pedagogical solutions for teaching intercultural film literacy education.
