In her doctoral dissertation MSc Islam Tanash develops new approximations and bounds to facilitate statistical performance analyses. These tools use unified approaches and algorithms, and they can help researchers design wireless systems efficiently and accurately, facilitate performance analyses in various communication systems, or even bring out new results that were previously difficult to obtain.

Technological advances and sophisticated applications are constantly evolving. A reliable prediction of their performance is crucial to their adoption in real-world systems. However, the robustness of the derived performance measures depends on the complexity of the encountered system and channel models, where most wireless communication systems encounter signal attenuation with different variables, including time, geographic location, and radio frequency, i.e., fading. This has aroused the field of statistical performance analysis.

The various statistical performance measures of a communication system usually result in complicated integrals that are usually challenging to solve in closed form. Performance can generally be assessed using field measurements and computer simulations. However, closed-form analytical solutions are much more desirable since they avoid costly, time-consuming, and demanding field measurements, as well as numerical simulations, which are sometimes plagued by instability and oscillation issues that can result in numerical evaluation failures.

“Improved analytical tools are therefore needed to study and contribute to the fundamentals of communication through the study of the different communication systems,” says Islam Tanash.

In her doctoral dissertation Islam Tanash proposed a collection of tight yet tractable tools, i.e., approximations and bounds, that facilitate statistical performance analyses. She focused on two important performance measures, namely the average error probability and the ergodic capacity.

“By incorporating several novel optimization methods, the accuracy of approximations and bounds is sufficiently improved and a low level of analytical complexity is maintained,” she states.

In addition to using the tools to study the performance of a vast range of communication systems, Tanash focused on one of the most promising and revolutionary technologies for 6G, namely, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. These tools, together with the developed theory, lay the foundation for the investigation of the latest communication technologies.

The doctoral dissertation of Islam Tanash in the field of Communications Engineering entitled Approximations for Performance Analysis in Wireless Communications and Applications to Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces will be publicly examined in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences of Tampere University at Hervanta Campus, in the auditorium TB109 of Tietotalo building (Korkeakoulunkatu 3, Tampere) on Friday 25th of November 2022 at 12:00.  The Opponent will be Professor Olav Tirkkonen from Aalto University, Finland. The Custos will be Professor Taneli Riihonen from Tampere University, Finland.
