Urban Lab is a multiscalar approach to urban sustainability through network, pedagogy, and research. 

  • As a network, the platform brings together actors from diverse disciplines with city residents and urban development professionals to collaboratively address real-world urban challenges. 
  • Pedagogically Urban Lab aims to strengthen students’ understanding of interdisciplinary urban planning, sustainable development principles, and the social, political, and infrastructural dimensions of cities. 
  • Urban Lab network supports research in the field of urban studies by encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration and information sharing.

Background

Urban Lab Course

Urban Lab Course has run as two 10cr courses within the Sustainable Urban Development program at Tampere University since 2022, connecting students with the practicalities of urban development projects and multidisciplinary project work. Researchers

Urban Lab produces young researchers who are competent in interdisciplinary research and project work. The course leads to thesis work on both bachelors and masters level in social and administrative sciences, and civil engineering. Urban Lab welcomes new perspectives and collaborations from around the world, either for the Urban Lab course or for ongoing research projects.
