Paavo V. Suominen Fund donates €500,000 to support education in refrigeration engineering

To mark its 50th anniversary, the Paavo V. Suominen Fund has donated €500,000 to support education in refrigeration engineering at Tampere University and to advance the development, modelling and characterisation of low-temperature technologies. These technologies play an important role in developing advanced energy storage solutions, improving the efficiency of industrial processes and addressing the growing cooling demands of emerging quantum technologies.

The €500,000 donation represents a significant investment in education, student support and research in refrigeration engineering. The donation strengthens the long-term development of research in refrigeration engineering and supports the exploration of new research directions that may lead to future technological breakthroughs. The Paavo V. Suominen Fund is one of the funds of the industrial research funds of Tampere University of Technology.

Energy-efficient refrigeration and low-temperature technologies play a key role in the clean transition. They help to reduce energy consumption and emissions as well as enable the development of new solutions for energy storage and industrial processes. The advancement of these technologies is an important step towards a more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable future. 

Tampere University has a strong, multidisciplinary research profile in refrigeration engineering and low-temperature technologies. Research combines modelling, theoretical expertise as well as experimental research.

New Possibilities for Research and Innovation

Noodi, the new hub for experimental research located on the Hervanta campus of Tampere University, serves as a centre for innovation and collaboration, creating new opportunities for advancing both research and technology. This new facility brings together the infrastructure and expertise required to advance these technologies while enabling the effective use of specialist equipment, imaging technologies and modelling tools. Noodi will further broaden the University's experimental research capabilities and promote interdisciplinary collaboration in support of technologies that contribute to the clean transition.

A multi-year fundraising campaign is currently underway to support the continued development of Noodi, with the aim of strengthening the centre and expanding opportunities for future research. The donation from the Paavo V. Suominen Fund is the second major contribution received through this campaign, bringing the total amount raised to €1 million. The funding will accelerate the development of new research environments, expand research opportunities, and support efforts to address challenges that will shape the future of both Tampere and Finland.
