Media Studies in Tampere

Media studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the dynamic relationships between media and society. At Tampere University, within the Unit of Communication Sciences, media studies is situated at the intersection of the humanities and social sciences, with its theoretical roots in critical cultural and social research. The field is characterized by strong theoretical reflexivity, societal relevance, and methodological diversity.

The key areas of research and teaching in media studies at Tampere University include digital media culture, critical data studies, media production studies, material media studies, sound studies, and performance studies.

Teaching is closely integrated with research, and the specialization collaborates closely with game studies at the bachelor’s level. Media studies is responsible for the Master’s Programme in Media, Culture and Society, while doctoral education is part of the interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Media, Communication and Performing Arts.

At Tampere University, media studies aims to produce critical, multi-perspectival, and analytical understanding of the role of media in late modern society, where globalization, digitalization, and datafication fundamentally shape social, cultural, and political processes. The research seeks not only to analyze these transformations, but also to contribute to their critical evaluation and to broader societal debate.
