To meet the emerging societal and industry needs, we at Tampere University have established a forward-looking specialisation, AI in Civil Engineering within the Master’s Programme in Civil Engineering that combines expertise in civil engineering, sustainability, data science, and artificial intelligence. The specialisation develops strong analytical and problem-solving skills while providing you with the ability to develop, implement, and critically apply digital technologies in engineering practice.
This specialisation is designed for curious and ambitious students who are passionate about both the built environment and data-driven technologies. Graduates are prepared for expert roles in Finland and internationally, in industry, the public sector and research. The degree is completed through a two-year Master's programme in Civil Engineering, AI in Civil Engineering.
Studies
Civil engineering is generating more data than ever before. Continuous monitoring systems, increasingly detailed site investigations, and advanced digital design processes produce vast amounts of information. The challenge is no longer simply how to collect data or perform calculations, but how to integrate data with computational models and transform it into reliable engineering decisions.
Another central theme of the AI in Civil Engineering specialisation is reliability and uncertainty. Future engineers must understand how deterministic and probabilistic approaches complement one another. Deterministic methods provide established rules, design procedures, and verification tools, while probabilistic approaches help quantify uncertainty, variability, model limitations, and risk. This is particularly important as projects become increasingly complex and multidisciplinary, spanning infrastructure, mining, coastal and offshore engineering, and climate adaptation.
Your studies will develop expertise in data analytics, computational modelling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, while maintaining a strong foundation in civil engineering. Through problem-based learning and project work, supported by courses in mathematics, statistics, and AI, you will apply advanced computational methods to real engineering challenges.
Our goal is not to transform civil engineers into data scientists, or vice versa. Rather, our goal is to educate engineers who understand complex multidisciplinary problems and can identify when data-driven and AI-based approaches genuinely improve decision-making.
All graduates gain competencies in both civil engineering and data science, while the balance between these areas can be adjusted according to your individual background and career goals. Students entering with a strong AI background can build fundamental civil engineering expertise and learn how advanced computational methods can be applied within the field. Civil engineering studies can be tailored towards geotechnical engineering, focusing on roads, railways, and foundation structures, or towards real estate development, with emphasis on management and finance.
Throughout the studies, you will work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, strengthening the professional skills required in modern engineering practice.
Teaching Supported by Research
Research on data, databases, reliability analysis, and machine learning applications has been a long-standing strength of our research environment. More recently, the development of large language model-based agents has opened new opportunities for improving data flows, automating workflows, and enhancing data utilisation throughout the construction and infrastructure sectors.
Examples of ongoing research include the Business Finland-funded AI Champion project and the Research Council of Finland-funded AI2Geo project.
AI Champion is a large-scale co-innovation project coordinated by Tampere University and serves as the third pilot of Finland's Data Economy Growth Programme. The project develops AI agents that improve the flow of information from organisational data silos into practical engineering decision-making.
AI2Geo (AI-supported Advanced Imaging for Geo) combines state-of-the-art imaging technologies with artificial intelligence to improve the efficient and reliable determination of subsurface ground properties.
You will have opportunities to work with authentic datasets generated within these and other research projects, alongside researchers and industry partners. We also aim for strong company involvement in project-based courses, ensuring that learning remains closely connected to real-world challenges.
