Co-funded by the European Union
Tampere University of Applied Sciences
Duration of project1.9.2026–31.12.2028

The Suomivilla project accelerates the new rise of Finnish wool. Suomivilla brings together operators in the industry, strengthens the competitiveness of the whole wool industry and develops new business opportunities. Together with the companies, it builds a strong Suomivilla brand that is known for quality, responsibility and sustainability both in Finland and internationally.

Background

The Suomivilla project starts with the need to strengthen the utilisation and competitiveness of wool produced in Finland as part of a sustainable textile industry. The project responds to the EU's green transition, circular economy and sustainable development goals, and aims to reduce dependence on imported raw materials, synthetic fibers and foreign wool processing services. At the same time, the need for closer cooperation in the field is recognised and the capacity of SMEs for innovation and renewal is strengthened.

The Suomivilla project is jointly implemented by Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Savonia University of Applied Sciences and LAB University of Applied Sciences.

Goal

The aim of the project is to renew the country brand of wool produced in Finland and to strengthen the value network, competitiveness and international position of the entire wool industry. The aim is to develop new wool-based products, services and processes and to create a common ecosystem between companies and research organisations. In addition, the project aims to increase the added value of wool produced in Finland, support responsible business operations, promote the sustainable growth and internationalisation of the sector and security of supply. The properties of Finnish wool fibre are studied in greater depth than before and information is produced that companies can use in developing new products.

Impact

The Suomivilla project builds cooperation, networks and operating models that strengthen the entire ecosystem of Finnish wool.
The long-term effects of the Suomivilla project include the increase in the value and degree of processing of domestic wool, the preservation of the sector's know-how and cultural heritage, the strengthening of the competitiveness and internationalisation of SMEs, and the progress of sustainable development and security of supply in the Finnish textile sector. The project produces permanent structures, new business opportunities and strengthens the position of Finnish wool both domestically and internationally.
