The Nordic Network in Genetic Counselling (NNGC) brings together Nordic stakeholders to develop a joint Nordic Master of Science in Genetic Counselling (MScGC) programme. The aim is to establish a high-quality educational programme that meets the requirements of the European Board of Medical Genetics (EBMG) and addresses the growing need for qualified genetic counselling professionals as genomic information and precision medicine become increasingly integrated into healthcare.
The collaboration involves Nordic higher education institutions and clinical partners that contribute expertise in genetics, clinical practice, and education to the programme.
Background
The rapid advances in genomics, the increasing use of genetic testing, and the growing adoption of precision medicine have created a rising demand for genetic counselling professionals across the Nordic countries. At the same time, educational pathways in genetic counselling remain fragmented, and the number of students in existing national programmes is relatively small. To address this challenge, the Nordic Network in Genetic Counselling (NNGC) is developing a joint Nordic Master of Science in Genetic Counselling (MScGC). The programme brings together the expertise of Nordic higher education institutions and clinical partners to create a high-quality, harmonized educational pathway that meets European standards and supports the growing need for qualified genetic counselling professionals.
Goal
The project aims to transform genetic and genomic counselling education from fragmented national solutions into a joint, quality-assured Nordic Master's programme. For the target group, namely current and future genetic counselling professionals, this change will provide improved opportunities to access a consistent, high-quality, and practice-oriented education, as well as the competencies needed to work in an international professional environment.
Impact
The impact of the project is based on strengthening expertise in genetic and genomic counselling and increasing the availability of qualified professionals across the Nordic countries. The joint Nordic Master's programme will harmonize the quality of education, support the standardization of professional competency requirements, and strengthen collaboration between education providers and clinical practice.
In the long term, the project will promote equitable access to high-quality genetic counselling services, enhance patient safety, and facilitate the mobility of expertise across the Nordic countries and Europe. In addition, the project will establish a sustainable Nordic collaboration framework that supports the continuous development of education, research, and professional practice.
