Our Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC), is aimed at students whose native language is other than Finnish. The studies combine strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills in social services, early childhood education and social pedagogy, with a special emphasis on intercultural communication and language awareness. The purpose of this Bachelor programme is to train professionals who can work in Finnish ECEC using the Finnish language. The programme is bilingual (English and Finnish). Therefore students should be motivated and committed to develop and improve their proficiency and skills in the Finnish language.
Applicants must have a minimum of B2 level in the English language (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to be eligible to apply. There is no prerequisite for proficiency in the Finnish language. In the beginning, the studies will mostly be conducted in English, with integration of the Finnish language in teaching and learning. As the studies progress, the use of Finnish increases and eventually exceeds the use of English. The programme includes Finnish as a second language studies, comprising approximately 22 ECTS credits. During the studies, proficiency in the Finnish language develops and improves, and by the time of graduation the student has achieved sufficient proficiency in Finnish to work in Finland.
The curriculum meets the requirements of the Finnish Early Childhood Education Act (2018): the studies include courses in ECEC and social pedagogy, granting eligibility to work as a qualified ECEC Social Pedagogue (varhaiskasvatuksen sosionomi). Graduates receive the degree title Bachelor of Social Services (sosionomi AMK).
As a Bachelor of Social Services (sosionomi AMK), you can work in a wide variety of professional environments, e.g.: ECEC, Child protection and family work, Schools and educational institutions, Youth work, Private sector companies or Non-profit organizations. The programme offers opportunities to deepen your interests and develop your professional skills in an international learning community. TAMK’s teaching and support staff guide you on your journey to becoming a Bachelor of Social Services, offering expert instruction, an encouraging atmosphere, study support, and opportunities to network with other future professionals. The education is meaningful and impactful — you have the chance to help create a better tomorrow together with others.
