Non-medical grade cannabis use for self-medication

Tampere University
Duration of project1.8.2023–31.7.2025

This research project maps the domestic recent history of medical cannabis and the current state of self-medication use of cannabinoids in Finland. The project systematically investigates the self-medication use of non-medicinal cannabis, the reasons behind the use and possible obstacles to medicinal use. The material collected by survey and interview methods is based on the research protocol developed by the MEDUSA project of the Dutch Trimbos Institute. The collection of survey data has ended, but the collection of interview data will continue until the end of 2024.

The main research questions are: 1) what are the motivations, usage habits and possible obstacles to medicinal use of people who use non-medicinal cannabis for self-medication in Finland? 2) How do these possibly differ between Finland and the Netherlands? In addition, we ask 3) how has the medical use of cannabinoids been discussed in Finnish medical publications in the years 1990-2022?
