Aleksi Hupli

My research projects have focused on the social scientific study of drugs. I have also published three non-fiction books in Finnish: the first concerning medical cannabis (Vihervaara & Hupli 2021, Basam Books), and the second based on my doctoral dissertation, which examined the enhancement use of psychoactive substances (Hupli 2024, Siltala). The book won the Scientific Book of the Year award from the Finnish Association of Scholarly Publishing in 2025. My third non-fiction book, Psykonautti – psykedeelinen käsitekirja mielen manifestiin* ('Psychonaut – A Psychedelic Handbook for a Manifesto of the Mind'), has just been released (Hupli 2026, Siltala).

Together with other young addiction researchers, I was awarded the "Scientific Achievement of 2024" prize by the Faculty of Social Sciences at Tampere University. In 2025, my book Älyä lääkkeistä ja päihteistä? Tajusteiden hyötykäyttö* (Hupli 2024, Siltala Publishing) won the "Scientific Book of the Year 2024" award from the Finnish Association of Scholarly Publishing.

For the 2021–2027 period, I have been appointed as a member of the Civil Society Forum on Drugs (CSFD), an expert group under the European Commission. I was also selected for the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) research network "Psychedelic renaissance: turn on, tune in and drop in" (PSY-NET, COST Action CA24130), specifically within Working Group 6, which focuses on European policy. Additionally, I serve as a board member of Humaania Päihdepolitiikkaa ry and as a deputy board member of the Psychedelic Research Association of Finland (Psykedeelitutkimusyhdistys ry). I am also part of the editorial team for the scientific journal Acta Psychedelica.
