Finnish education, and teacher education in particular, is facing global and national challenges, such as sustainability, increasing diversity, declining skills levels and changes in working life. FinTED is a research infrastructure that brings together data on teacher education and actors at national level and enables extensive international research collaboration. The repository, a collaboration between eight universities, serves a wide range of higher education institutions - research, research-based educational development and commercial innovation.

The objectives of the repository are

  • strengthening national and international research cooperation in teacher education
  • developing the quality and quantity of research in teacher education
  • knowledge management in teacher education
  • strengthening the competence of teachers and teacher trainers
  • anticipating the teacher's future competence needs

The FinTED repository is being built by all Finnish universities with a teacher education unit: the University of Turku, University of Jyväskylä, Helsinki University, University of Eastern Finland, University of Lapland, University of Oulu, Tampere University and Åbo Akademi University. The FinTED data infrastructure is coordinated by the University of Turku.

The basis of the database is national research data collected in the follow-up research (KASVU). KASVU-study includes data collection for all teacher students selected through a two-stage selection in the field of education. Questionnaire material is collected from those selected as teacher students, which is supplemented with study register data. In addition the study will follow their study paths and transition to working life. The collection of the data has started in 2020.
