The aim of the project is to develop a tool for assessing competence related to the prevention and treatment of diabetes, as well as an operational model for its implementation. Another goal is to strengthen the competence of nurses working in the health sector in the prevention and treatment of diabetes by developing case-based material. Additionally, the aim is to create an operational model for recognizing and strengthening competence for use in wellbeing regions.
The project will produce a digital tool for competence assessment, case-based material for strengthening competence, and an operational model for their implementation. The project involves close collaboration with experts in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
Background
Diabetes is a major public health issue in Finland, with an estimated 600,000 people affected. Diabetes incurs significant healthcare costs, particularly due to the treatment of diabetes-related complications. Every social and healthcare professional encounters individuals at risk for diabetes and those who have diabetes in their work. Preventing diabetes and effectively managing it can prevent the development of diabetes-related complications and thus save healthcare costs. At the same time, it also broadly impacts the prevention of other conditions such as cardiovascular diseases. Diabetes affects not only blood sugar balance but also the cardiovascular system, kidneys, eyes, and nervous system, so expertise in diabetes care also requires knowledge of treating these related conditions.
Goal
The aim of the project is to strengthen expertise in diabetes prevention and care by developing a tool for identifying and assessing competencies, as well as designing a model for competency development and case-based materials through which professionals can practice and test their skills.
Impact
The results of the project can be utilized nationally. The developed model for identifying and strengthening competencies can be more broadly applied to the development of expertise in the care of other major somatic public health issues.
