The Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (CoE AgeCare)

Tampere University

The Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (CoE AgeCare) is one of the 12 Centres of Excellence that the Academy of Finland has chosen for the period 2018-2025. The CoE AgeCare is a joint centre of four research groups and three universities (University of Jyväskylä, Tampere University, University of Helsinki), which is led by professor Teppo Kröger, University of Jyväskylä. The research groups focus on different thematic areas but work closely together. Research groups are led by professor Teppo Kröger (care, care policy, comparative care research), University Jyväskylä, professor Sakari Taipale (digitalization, transforming care work), University of Jyväskylä, professor Sirpa Wrede (transnationalisation, migrant carers, care work), University of Helsinki, and docent Outi Jolanki (PI period 2023-2025) and professor Marja Jylhä (PI period 2018-2022), Tampere University.

Tampere University research group has two main thematic areas which fall under studies on population ageing, health and functional ability of older people, and studies on agency of older adults in matters of care, wellbeing, housing and living environment. The Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care works within Faculty of Social Sciences, Gerontology, Tampere University, and its activities are linked to activities of Gerontology Research Centre (GEREC) which is a joint research centre of Tampere University and University of Jyväskylä.

CoEs are flagships of Finnish research that are expected to carve out new avenues for research, develop creative research environments and train new talented researchers. CoE AgeCare studies the transformation of ageing and care using novel conceptual and interdisciplinary perspectives, conjoining the analysis of diversification of everyday life to that of ongoing profound societal and policy change. The CoE combines scholarship from social policy, sociology and gerontology, analysing older people’s care needs, agency and equality as well as the changing character of care work.
