The following research groups are affiliated with CGPH.
Global Health Work and Environment (GLOWE)
GLOWE conducts multidisciplinary research on health policies, social determinants, well-being economies, and occupational, and environmental health. It hosts the WHO Collaborating Centre (WHO CC) for Health in All Policies, promoting research on health disparities driven by social, economic, and environmental factors. Through an interdisciplinary approach, GLOWE examines global influences on health and welfare, particularly in LMICs.
Health Promotion
The group uses behavioral and social science approaches to tackle population health challenges, focusing on theory-driven, co-created interventions. The research addresses health inequalities among vulnerable groups in LMICs, including youth mental health and NCD prevention in Africa and South Asia. Key projects like YiPEE and Changemaker employ participatory methods to design and evaluate sustainable health solutions. The group also contributes to implementation of science training through the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, supported by major funders like the EU and NIH.
TamCAM Global Health
The TamCAM Global Health group at MET specializes in maternal and child health, focusing on malaria, preterm birth, and malnutrition in LMICs. Their research combines molecular, environmental, and social approaches to improve child development and intergenerational health, particularly in Malawi. They develop and test innovative interventions while assessing their real-world feasibility. Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, they collaborate with leading research institutes across the USA, Malawi, Bangladesh, Rwanda, and India.
The Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Vaccine Programs
This epidemiology research group focuses on prevention and control of infectious diseases, including outbreak, epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response, evaluating vaccination programs, and global health security. Our research networks and projects span Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Current studies address disease burden and risk factors, vaccine acceptance and hesitancy, strengthening disease surveillance, and pandemic preparedness, and include collaborations with WHO, CDC and research institutes in many LMICs. The group has strong emphasis on strengthening research capacity in LMICs through the IPPE training program.
The Lifestyle and Maternal Health Epidemiology
The research team investigates diet, physical activity, and metabolic conditions (gestational diabetes, Type 2 diabetes) in pregnant/postpartum women in South Asia (MatriPoshan and Mother-Infant studies) and among migrants in Finland. A key initiative is the NERC project, funded by Finland's MFA, which strengthens nutrition research/education capacity in Nepalese universities. The group collaborates with THL (Finland), Tribhuvan University (Nepal), and Indian research institutes, focusing on inclusive, practice-relevant health solutions for vulnerable populations.
