Building physical performance of wall and roof structures can be studied with the building physical research equipment, which is developed and built by Tampere University’s building physics research group. The equipment is computer-controlled.

Different conditions can be adjusted: temperature, relative humidity, and pressure on both sides of the test element, which can be divided into two or four sectors to examine variations of same structure, e.g. different insulation materials, vapour and air barriers, and sheathing materials.

Also, total heat transfer coefficient (U-value) can be determined by using calibrated hot box method based on both ISO and EN standards.  U-value is determined from electric power that is used to warm up the air, area of the element, and temperature difference.
