Equality and equity

At Tampere University, everyone has the right to a safe, accessible and equal environment. Each of us has the right to a safe, accessible and equitable working and learning environment. We promote equality and diversity in a systematic manner and monitor the impact of our work. Advancing equality and non-discrimination requires the commitment of our entire community and concrete actions in our everyday activities.

Why promoting equality and equity is important for us?

A shared value and responsibility. Equality, non-discrimination and diversity are integral to the University’s identity and operational culture – they are not a separate project but an everyday way of working.

A safe and accessible community. We develop our facilities, digital services, teaching and processes so that as many members of our community as possible can participate without the need for separate individual arrangements.

Data as the basis for development. We monitor the state of equality and non-discrimination and the progress of development measures using the equality and non-discrimination indicators compiled for this purpose. We integrate development actions into leadership and annual planning as part of data-informed decision-making.

What does this mean in practice?

1) Responsible organisational culture and leadership

– competence, data‑informed decision‑making, safe systems.

2) Equal, transparent HR Practices

– recruitment, pay transparency, career paths, review of fixed‑term employment contracts.

3) Prevention of inappropriate behaviour, bullying and harassment, and intervention

– clear processes, training, early intervention.

4) Accessible and diversity-promoting education and learning

– accessibility, guidance, individual study arrangements, curriculum development.

5) Organisational culture of equality, non-discrimination and accessibility

– personnel training, communications and the development of work and study environments.

How do we monitor the progress?

  • Our Equal Opportunities Committee regularly monitors the progress of the measures set out in our policy.
  • The equality and non-discrimination indicators we have compiled help us to understand the overall state of equality and non-discrimination at our University. It also helps us to identify developments and trends, and to guide our decision-making. We also integrate the key indicators into the University’s management reporting systems.
  • We monitor the progress of the policy’s measures also as part of the annual planning carried out in our faculties and units.
