CIVIT partners with DXOMARK to establish a cutting-edge imaging lab in Tampere

This collaboration will establish a state-of-the-art imaging lab in Tampere, enhancing CIVIT’s capabilities in image quality testing and supporting the region’s vibrant imaging ecosystem. The DXOMARK lab, which uses Camera Analyzer tools, will expand CIVIT’s research and testing services to both academic and commercial stakeholders.
Imaging research is one of Tampere University’s strategic priority areas
CIVIT’s partnership with DXOMARK strengthens Tampere University’s position in imaging research and innovation. Imaging is a strategic, core research area for Tampere University, and the Tampere region is a significant hub of imaging expertise.
“Our new collaboration with DXOMARK is a testament to our expertise and an excellent addition to our international network of partners. This new initiative is extremely important as it not only fortifies the region’s imaging ecosystem but also supports the achievement of the University’s strategic goals”, says Dr. Jarmo Takala, Vice President at Tampere University.
The new world-class image quality assessment system is funded by the Sustainable Growth Programme for Finland through Business Finland and the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
Collaboration strengthens Tampere’s international position
The new lab, located on the Hervanta campus, will support testing a wide range of imaging technologies, including smartphones, surveillance systems, body cameras and automotive cameras. DXOMARK will provide a cutting-edge, turn-key solution featuring advanced hardware, software and ongoing support.
The joint lab reflects the strengths of Tampere’s imaging ecosystem and CIVIT’s commitment to advancing imaging science. It will serve as a hub for research, testing and the development of new protocols, solidifying Tampere’s status as one of the global leaders in imaging innovation.
“The establishment of this joint lab marks the creation of a state-of-the-art facility capable of testing and profiling diverse imaging pipelines. Our collaboration with DXOMARK will ensure we remain at the forefront of technological advancements as well as enable our students to participate in cutting-edge research from the early stages of their education,” says Dr. Atanas Gotchev, Director of CIVIT.
Educating the next generation of experts and pursuing high-impact research collaboration
As part of the partnership, CIVIT and DXOMARK will collaborate to train the next generation of imaging experts. This includes developing laboratory exercises that incorporate the latest advancements in imaging technologies, providing students with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills. They will also offer joint internships and master’s thesis topics, ensuring students gain hands-on experience that bridges academic research and industry applications.
Beyond education, the two partners will pursue collaborative research to create new methods for image quality assessment and testing protocols. They will also work together to secure funding through the EU’s research programmes to establish a strong foundation for their long-term collaboration and innovation.
“We are excited to collaborate with CIVIT to bring DXOMARK’s expertise in image quality assessment to Tampere’s thriving imaging ecosystem. This partnership underscores our commitment to advancing imaging science by providing cutting-edge tools and methodologies for both academic and commercial applications. By combining our industry-leading testing solutions with CIVIT’s research excellence, we aim to drive innovation in imaging technologies and support the next generation of experts in the field”, says Dr. Frédéric Guichard, CEO & CTO of DXOMARK.
The partnership highlights Tampere’s status as one of the world-renowned centres in imaging technology. The new lab will help to strengthen ties between local companies and global experts, fuelling innovation and fostering economic growth in the region.
